PHONOGRAPH AND GRAPHOPHONE HDISK HOLDING CABINET. APPLICATION FILED DEO. 23, 1913.
Patented Dec. 29, 1914n {lll/[MMIII rn oro t Woran Milind -this einer Specification of Letters /r di. mais Application filed .December 5:3, telit. Serial 305,393.
To all' whom it may concern: i
lle it known that L SAMUEL l-lons'rnnt., a citizen oipi the lUnited States.) residing at New York, county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Phonograph and Graphophone Dish: 'dolding Cabinets, of which the following' is a specification.
rihis invention relates to phonograph and graphophone disk holding cabinets.
My object is to provide a cabinet holder or filing case, for phonograph or graphephone disks which will be of very siinple and inexpensive construction, While light, strong and durable and which will not he subject to t 1e warping action usually found in these cabinets Where Wood is commonly employed. lt will be understood that cahinets of the character set forth have coinpartinents Whose Walls are quite close tgether, for economy of space, on account ot the thinness of the graphophone disks adapted to be contained therein. Where Wood is employed, as has heretofore been common, the thin Walls ot the compartments Warp and hy their distortion interfere with the insertion and removal of the graphephone disks and, where dish ejecting mechanism is employed, prevent the operation thereolg or decrease its etl'iciency.
My invention overcomes the foregoing detects and it consists, first, of a plurality ot suspended compartments, as distinguished from compartments whose Walls are anchored at all poi-nts; second. of suspended coinpartnients combined with tensioning means to keep the Walls thereof inproper position: third7 a cabinet Whose partitions are of paper or its equivalent? combined with spacingr devices for said compartments and connecting or Stringing' means for fastening' the Walls or partitions and the spacing devices together; fourth, in improved selective ejector mechanism and guiding means; fifth, in the particular tensioning, spacing and hanging means employed; and finally, in the Qjeneral combination of parts which comprises the complete cabinet, holder or tiling case.
,ln the accompanying" drawings: Figure l is a iront elevation; 2., a cross section adjacent theend oE the cabinet; Fig. 3, a view ot one ofthe partitions; Fig. si, a detail oa spacing strip or rneniher; Fig. 5, a siniilarbview ot a stringerghig. the side o )eninos 5 in their lower a f etai phone dish.
The case l may he ot Wood, metal or other material .having suitable rifidity and strength.
My suspended holder is designated, generally, 2 and is contained Within and suspended from the upper part of a case l which may he inserted in any suitable outer cabinet la. rl`he entire disk holding and ejecting means are carried, self-contained, in easel and may he iitted into any desired ornamental cabinet or Wholly removed therefrom at will. Case l may be fastened inside cabinet l or merely positioned thereon. The holder is composed ot' pape1 or cardboard walls or partitions 3 which have openings at in their upper portions and other portions (Fig. lnterposed between partitions 3 are spacers G consisting of strips of heavy cardboard which have openings corresponding' in number and alineinent with the openings 4: and 5e respectively. The spacing,1
strips 6 are arranged horizontally at the top and bottoni o the partitions 3 and eX- tend from the front to the rear edges ol the latter or substantially so. These spacing strips 6 are of such thickness as to define, with the partitions 3, compartments 8 which have parallel Walls and are oi a, Width adapting them to easily receive the graphephone or phonograph disks or tablets. The partitions 3 and spacingr strips 6 are strung upon metal strips or hars@ (Fig. said hars passing through the holes d and 7 at the tops of the partitions and tlnoueh the holes and 7 at the bottoms thereof. The lower set ot strips 9 are not connected to the sides of the case but the upper strips or stringers 9a have their ends engaged with the walls of the ease l, and in consequence, the entire holder is' suspended. from the upper part of the case l, hut is not attached to the lower part lb thereof save by the tensioning devices (Fig. 7). These tensionin?,` devices consist of U-shaped metallic clips l0 having openings il through which the lower stringere 9i pass. Screwed into the clips 10 are the screws l2 Whose Shanks pass through the bottoni it" et the ease and Whose heads are outside the bottom of said case and ai'e adapted to he turned to pull downwardly on the stringers 9 and on the lower strips 6 and the lower parts of the partitions 3 to thereby tension the suspended partitions and bring them to such degree of tautness as will maintain their walls in substantial parallelism. The upper faces of the lower strips 6 constitute the bottoms of the compartments 8 on which the graphophone disks rest.
To keep the lower-strips 6 spaced from the 'upper strips (i, I provide as many screws 14 as may be necessary. These screws have their ends screwthreaded into sockets 15 carried by the stringers 9, 9u.' By turning the screws, the stringers 9, 9, are forced away from eachother and the tension is imparted vertically to the partitions 3. l
Referring to Figs. 6 and 8, in each compartment 8 is a single ejector 16 of slightly less width than the compartment and loosely strung on a metal or wooden pivot pin or hanger 17 which extends through all of the partitions 3 and has its ends supported by the case 1.l rfhe ejector, being pivoted at its upper part, tends to restore itself to normal upright position when it is released, but I preferablyv employ a single very flexiblc resilient wire oi.' small rod 18` whose ends are securedto case 1 and whose intermediate part bears against the upper ends of all/the ejector-s 16 and keeps them in normal upright position. Each ejector constitutes a movable hack for the compartment 8 which keeps the graphophone disk from rolling out backward, sulicient space being left between the rear edges of the partitions 3 and the back of the case 1 to permit the play of the upper part of the ejector necessary for the ejection of the graphophone disk.
Sui-mounting the partitions is a sheet metal cap 19 whose sides 20 overlap and are secured to the end partitions by screws or fastenings 21 which enter the spacing strips 6. i The cap had alternating guide grooves 22 and walls 23, the latter receiving and being crimped tightly against the upper ends of the paper partitions 3. The/sides 2O have slots 2l through which the stringcrs 9 pass. I employ a removable push rod Q5 Iwhich canbe inserted in any one ot the guide grooves Q2 and pushed against the upper end oi the ector 16 of the compartment corresponding to the given groove for the purpose of ejecting the graphophone. disk in said compartment. By` this means I obviate the necessity of using a separate push rod for each ejector l() and greatly simplify and cheapen the construction. l
do not, however, except when so stated in ,the claims, intend to limit inyselt to a single push-rod as several may be used, or, a separate one for each groove 22. Other means than the tensioning devices 10 can be used for tensioning the partitions, such, for in stance, as a weight in the shape of a nietallic plate connected to the lower ends of the partitions. The weight oi the graphephone disk may sometimes be sullicient, without en'iploying anyv tensioning means whatever. I
Having thus described my inventiomwhat l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
