Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 22, 1914.
Application filed May 27, 1914. Serial No. 841,214.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM J. WAM- BAUGII, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Morgantown, in the county of Monongalia and State of West Virginia, have invented a new and Improved Lamp- Chimney, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved lamp chimney adapted to be securely held in position on the chimney support of the lamp by the usual spring clamps to prevent the chimney from toppling over when carrying the lamp about and to insure accurate centering of the chimney relative to the burner. In order to accomplish the desired result the base of the chimney is provided with a bearing surface in the form of a frustum of a cone thusv providing straight upwardly and inwardly inclined sides adaptedto be engaged by the spring clamps of the chimney support to securely hold the chimney in position on the support at the same time allowing expansion and contraction of the base without danger of being cracked by the spring clamps of the chimney support.
A practical embodimentof the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both views.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the lamp chimney in position on a chimney support shown in dotted lines, part of the chimney being shown in section; and Fig. 2 is an inverted plan view of the chimney.
The body A of the chimney is of usual shape while its base B is provided with a bearing surface in .the form of a frustum of a cone, the lower end of which terminates in an inwardly and downwardly inclined bottom portion C, the lower edge of which is adapted to be seated on the chimney support D provided with the usual spring clamps E adapted to bear against the outer face of the bearing surface of the base B. It will be noticed that by providing the base B with a bearing surface in the form of a frustum of a cone, straight side edges are provided for engagement throughout their height by the correspondingly shaped spring clamps E of the chimney support D, thus insuring an exceedingly strong hold of the clamps E on the said bearing surface to prevent the chimney from toppling over when carrying the lamp about. It will also be noticed that by the arrangement described the chimney A is held in proper centering position relative to the burner and is not liable to shift laterally. By bending the bottom C inwardly the curved portions of the spring clamps E are left unobstructed to allow the chimney clamps E to readily yield when placing the chimney in position on the support D or when removing it therefrom. By the arrangement described a large contact is had between each spring clamp E and the bearing surface of the base B so that the said spring clamps E do not need to bear with considerable force on the base of the chimney to hold the latter in place and consequently the base B can readily expand and contract without undue pressure on the part of the chimney.
It is expressly understood that the use of a straight side edge of the base B instead of a curved edge is for the purpose of having it conform to that form of spring clamp that, while readily yielding for the insertion of the chimney base, will yet exert the greatest possible resistance to a force tending to withdraw said base from its hold.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A lamp chimney provided with a base having a circular bearing surface in the form of a frustum of a cone, thereby providing straight bearing sides inclined inwardly and upwardly and adapted to be engaged by the spring'clamps of a chimney support.
2. A lamp chimney provided with a base having a circular bearing surface in the form of a frustum of a cone thereby providing straight bearing sides inclined inwardly and upwardly and adapted to be engaged by the spring clanips of a chimney name to this specification in the presence of support, the bottom portion of the base betwo subscribing witnesses. ing bent directly from said straight sides inward and downward from the lower end WILLIAM JACOB WAMBAUGH' of the said bearing surface to allow the Witnesses: spring clamps to flex. GRACE MARTIN,
In testimony whereof I have signed my CO A A. BERRY.
copies of this patent may be obtained tor five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents.
