Description

f UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.'
i WARREN H. TAYLOR, OF` STAMFORD, CONNECTICUT.
IMPROVEMENT IN FLEXIBLE FAsTENlNcs FOR GLASS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 112,193,l dated February 28, 1,871.
To all whom it may concern: j
Be it known that I, WARREN H. TAYLOR, of Stamford, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Method of Fastening Glass in Metallic Doors and Tindows and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof7 reference being had to the accompanying drawing, making a part of this specification.
My invention has reference more particularly to the metallic doors in use upon postoffce lock-boxes, one of which is represented in the annexed drawing, in which- Figure l is a front elevation; Fig. 2, a vertical section on line A B, and Fig. 3 a plan andV elevation of flexible disk.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspondin g parts.
The door is provided with a suitable flange surrounding the space which it is desired to close with glass, and against this fiange, from the rear or inside, is placed the glass, of suita ble size, as shown in drawing. Two or more wires are then riveted into the door-frame behind the glass, and these wires are encircled by disks of india-rubber, leather, or other flexible material, of such dimensions that one side of their peripheries presses against the back or inner side of the glass, and thus holds it with a constant pressure against the beforementioned flange.
The advantages secured by this arrangement are simplicity, cheapness, convenience of adjustment in glazing, and great security against breakage of the glass, experience having demonstrated that when the glass is thus secured theV door may be subjected to almost any amount of concussion without injury to the glass 3 Whereas when the glass is secured by wires or other rigid fastenings, a comparatively slight jarring of the door is often sufficient to breakthe glass.
A further advantage in the use of my iiexible fastening consists in the fact that by means of it al1 rattling of the glasses is eftectually prevented.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the guard-wires E E and iiexible washers R R with a suitably-formed metallic door or window, substantially as and for the purposes hereinbefore described.
W. H. TAYLOR.
