IMPROVEMENT IN WASHING-MACHINES.

The Schedule referred to ln these Letten Patent and making part o! the lame.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, THEoPHrnUs Benen, of Northport, in the county of Suffolk and State of' New York, have invented a new and'improved Washing-Machine; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof', which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same,

lreference being had to the accom pan yin g drawing forming part of this specification.

This invention relates to improvements in washing machines; and

It consists in a xed rubber of round rods of' wood, connected to end pieces, being about one-sixth of a circle, more or less, placed in a case so as to he readily removed, and a suspended rubber, consisting of Va grooved board, which is.. suspended on journals supported on springs and adjusting-,screws in posts at one side of the case, in a manner to allow awide range of movement to the said rubber for accommodating it to the quantity of clothes in hand, all as as hereinafter described.

A is along narrow ease, with vertical ends and one vertical and one oblique side, in which I place a fixed rubber, consisting of the end pieces B, with concave upper' sides, plane bottoms, and oblique ends, fitting the bottom and oblique sides of' the case, 'as clearly shown in fig. 2, and the round seniicirenlar or othershaped rods C connected to them; and above this I suspend the convex rubber D, consisting of a grooved board, from the oscillating shalt E, which is mounted in bearings F, arranged between spiral springs G H', in a slot in the posts I, one in each, which slots are covered by pieces K, attached to the bearings, and working up and down with them.

M, a temper-screw, one for each ot' said blocks,

lscrewing down through the top ofthe posts, to vary are widened considerably ou that side of' the vertical plane of' the axis to which the rubber is swung in op-I eratiug, so that the gravity will assist in the return movement, in which the greatest amount ofthe rubbing is done.

0 is the break or handle -for operating the rubber D, which is taken in the hands for working it back and forth.

The end pieces P of this brake, which slide into grooves arranged obliquely in the inner sides of the hangers N, are connected at the lower ends by a springing rod, Q, which, being sprung so as to shorten the distance between the ends to admit the said end pieces into the grooves, holds the said pieces therein by its tension, so that they need no other fastening, and may be readily taken out when required forrany purpose.

The movable board is swung up over the axis so that the brake bears against the side R, where it will rest while clothes are being put in or taken out.

The springs G H afford a wide range for the movable board to work close to the fixed rubber, or a considerable dist-ance from it, for a small or large quantity of clothes to be washed, as may be required.

A detachable cover, S', is applied, so as to aord space to each end for the hangers N and the end pieces P of the break.

I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination, with tbe fixed rubber, of' the swinging board D, suspendedon the shaft E, supported in bearings F, said bearings being arranged between the springs G H in the slotted posts, and having the blocks L and temper-screws M combined with them, all substantially as specified.

2. The end pieces N of the brake O, confined in the slots in the hangers by the tension of' the rod Q, substantially as specified..
