' M invention iielates to improvements in folding couches or davenports and the object of .my invention is the provision of means whereby the back section ma which it will be out of the way when the sections are unfolded and held or locked in such a position.

A further object of my invention is the provision of means whereby the back section may be supported Aor folded in to'the casing, if desired, when the sections are unfolded for use. .l

Referring now to the drawings, 1 `,designates generally the frame liavin sides 10 60 and a back 11, preferably exten ing above the top of the sides. When it is desired to lower the back section 23, all that is necessary to do is to swing the plates 34: about their pivots so that the pins 38 enter the long slot 35, permitting the plates 34 t'o swing about their pivots.

In the event that it is not desired when the seat section 18 is unfolded, to raise the section 23, it may be folded into the bail,

Inorder to prevent the back section from being moved into the folded position within -the back of the frame when the seat 18 is in use, suitable stops 39-are provided on the back edge-of the seat 18 ai these stops-39 occupy positions the path of the free -edge of the back section while it is being folded and thus this edge will engage the sto s as shown in Fig. 1.

-onditions may arise or the individual opinionsof the users may be such that some may prefer the back raised and out of the way when the device is used as a bed while others may prefer the back down and pushed into the frame 'as shown in Fig. 5. Thehousing of the legs and their operating links behind the back frame leaves a greater amount ,of space within` the bottom of the' frame for the reception of the mattress and bed coverings.

While I have described and shown certain means for accomplishing results desired it Vis understood that these same results may be attained by other means without departing from the spirit of 'my invention.

Having4 thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to obtain by Letters Patent is:

1. In a folding bed the combination with a frame, bed sections, a movable back normally in position to be used as a back rest,

and means for causing said 'back to rotate into aiosition out of the Way above or within sai frame, and means for locking said back when in raised position.

2. In a'foldin'g bedthe combination of a frame, a plurality of bed sections, a-.ba'ck `section supporting means for the outermost of saidsections adapted to move upwardly and forwardly and me ns whereby said outermost section` andit supports may beconcealed within said fr me.

4. In a folding bed, the combination with a frame, a movable back and lever connections with the top of said frame whereby aid back may be swung either above or within said frame at will, a single plate secured at the top of said frame provided with angular slot, hinge connections on one of said levers adapted to slide in said slot and lock said back in raised position.

5. In a folding bed, a combination of a frame, a plurality of bed sections, a back section and means for swinging said back section either above;.1or within said frame, said means comprising a plate rigidly mounted on said frame, a swinging link mounted thereon, an uEper and lower link connection between the ack and said swinging link, a second swinging link mounted on' said plate and secured at its lower end to said upper link intermediate to its points of attachment and means for locking said back to an upright position. i

6. In a folding bed the combination with a frame, a plurality of bed sections, a back section, means for swinging said 4back section either above or Within said frame and locking said back in raised position, said means comprising a series of 'swinging linke` a plate provided with an angular slot, and means mounted on one of said links to engage said slot.
