AUTOMOBILE LAP-ROBE.
Specication of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 15, 1914.
Application led cto'ber 31, 1912. Serial No. 728,788.
To all whom it may Concern:
Be it known that I, SOLOMON I. SCHWARZ, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Automobile Lap-Robes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention is an improved lap robe and combination of lap robe and overshoes, particularly adapted for use by the drivers of automobiles.
The invention consists in the construction and combination of parts shown in the drawing and hereinafterv described and definitely pointed out in the claim.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a rear view of the lower part of a lap robe in which the invention is embodied, when the overshoes arey hanging by the tapes from the pockets in which they are ordinarily contained. Fig. 2 is an enlarged rear view of a part of the lower end of the lap robe with a part of the rear layer of material broken away, to show the overshoe and tape in a pocket. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view in the plane of line 3 3 on Fig. 2; and Fig. 4 is a sectional side view which shows the relative position of the lower end of the robe and the overshoe when in use.
The lap robe A is, or may be of ordinary construction, Xcept that near the lower edge thereof are two pockets B, B,y which open downward at points adjacent to said lower edge. The lap robe as shown is made of two layers of material a, al, which are united by stitching along their marginal edges, except for two short stretches at which they are left disconnected so as to form openings to the pockets B. These pockets are merely spaces between the two layers, the size and shape of which space is determined by a row or rows of stitching b which connects the two layers of material. The mouths of the pockets may be closed by means of suitable catches F1, which may be of any'construction suitable for temporarily connecting together the two disconnected layers of material. The pockets are made of such size that each will receive a flexible overshoe C which may be of any suitable construction. A fieXible tape D is associated with each pocket and each overshoe. Each of these tapes is connected to the robe within and near the upper end of the will or may substantiallyA rest upon the door 'j of the vehicle when the drivers foot so rests. At the same time there is such flexibility in the connection between the over'- shoeand the robe that the foot of the driver is allowed allV of the freedom of motion required in driving the car without causing any substantial movement of the lower edge of the robe, such as will move it out of a desired protecting position. The tapes are moreover made of two easily detachable parts d, all. That is to say, there is a short piece all which is Xed to the toe of the overshoe; and these two parts are provided with suitable means whereby they can be easily connected, as shown in the drawing, or disconnected so as to allow the driver to leave they car and wear the shoes. If the overshoes employed are iieXible cloth slices, they will, when in the pocket, occupy so little room that the robe will be, to all intents and purposes, of ordinary construction and adaptability for use. 1When it is desired to use the shoes in connection with the robe the driver may open the pockets and pull out the shoes and put themen.
Having described my invention, I claim: A lap robe having a pocket which opens downward and at a point adjacent to the lower edge of the robe, an overshoe adapted to be put into said pocket, means for clos.'- ing the mouth of the pocket, and a iieXible tape which is connected at its upper end tothe robe and extends from its said point of connection loosely down throughand out of said pocket, the lower end of said tape being connected with the toe of said overshoe.
In testimony whereof, I hereunto afx my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
Witnesses:
A. J. HUDSON, N. O. HUBBARD.
