Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 8, 1914.
Application filed April 11, 1912. Serial No. 689,958.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, CHARLES E. Junxixs, of Reading, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, a citizen of the United States, have invented a new and useful llmprovcniiont in Display-Boxes, of which. the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accon'ipai'iying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in explaining its nature.
The object of my invention is to provide a box of the above character and one especially adapted for the display of candy, said box having a body, a cover and separate in closed parts all of which when assembled with the cover on will present the appearance of an ordinary box, but which is czpable of being so disassei'nbled that with the cover on a portion of the contents of the box may be supported by the body of the box but displayed outside the same while with the cover removedfrom the box the entire contents of the box may be supported and displayed on the body thereof in a single layer.
The construction embodying my inven tion can best be seen and understood by reference to the drawings in which- Figure 1 is a view of the box in perspective with a portion of the cover excised and one of the sides of the body of the box occupying a downturned position. Fig. 2 is a cross section showing the assembled box with the cover on. Fig. 3 shows in perspective the box disassembled with the cover removed and the manner in which the entire contents of the box may be supported and displayed upon the body thereof in a single layer.
Referring to the drawings :-1 represents the body of the box; 2 the cover. The body of the box comprises a bottom 3, ends 4:, 4t and sides 5, 5. The cover 2 is a telescopic cover of the ordinary type and is adapted to fit over the sides and ends of the box in the usual manner. The ends 4-, l of the body of the box are fixed to the bottom thereof. The sides 5, 5 of the body of the box are flexibly secured to the bottom thereof whereby they may assume an upright position forming sides as such or a downturned position when they lie in substantially the same plane as the bottom of the box and in substantial continuation thereof.
Located within the body of the box to rest upon the bottom 3 thereof is a tray 6 adapted to contain preferably a single layer of goods. This tray fits snugly between the sides and ends of the body of the box, the tt'ltlS of the tray providing a bearing against which the hinged sides of the body of the box may hear when occupying an uptiirned position and for defining such posi' tion, the cover then easily slipping over and enveloping the same. The tray (3 is also preferably lixed to the body of the box, according to the construction shown, being socured to the ends it, 4t thereof.
'Located within the body of the box over the tray (3 are separate removable twin trays 7, 7, respectively, adapted to contain preferably a single layer of goods. These trays lit snugly between the sides and ends of the box abutting one another, and rest upon the tray (3. They may also be supported by a bridge 8 laid within the tray (5 although such added support is not necessary.
The depth of the trays is such that when the removable trays are resting upon the bottom tray (3 each of the removable trays with the bottom tray will present a combined depth or height substantially equal to that of the hinged sides of the box when occupying a vertical position. Each of the removable trays presents, also, a bottom area substantially equal to the area presented by each hinged side of the box when occupying a (lOWIltlll'l'lOtl position as aforesaid. The depth or height of each of the removable trays is also substantially equal to that of the bottom tray.
A box according to the above construction has the following essential advantages: \Vith the cover upon the box either one or both the sides 5, 5 may be turned down when either one or both the trays 7. 7 removed from the box may be exhibited thereon, the box being thus essentially adapted for purposes of counter display. iVith the cover removed both trays removed from the body of the box may be laid upon the downturned sides of the bodv and thus the entire contents of the box displayed in a single layer.
Having thus fullv described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States 1. A. box having a body and a telescopic cover fitting over the same. said bodv of the box having-i a bottom with hinged sides marginally secured whereby said sides may occupy a. vertical or a downturned position with relation to said bottom, a tray located within said body of the box to rest upon the bottom thereof, and other separate and removable trays located above and resting upon said tray, and which separate trays when removed are adapted to rest upon said sides of the box when occupying av downturned position as aforesaid.
A box having a body and a telescopic cover adapted to fit over the same, said body of the box having a bottom, vertical fixed ends and hinged sides marginally secured whereby said sides may occupy a vertical or downturned position with relation to said bottom, a tray located within said bodv of the box to rest upon the bottom thereof, and other separate and removable trays l0- eated above and resting upon said tray, and which separate trays when removed are adapted to rest upon said sides of the box when occupying a downturned position as aforesaid.
S. A box havin a body and a telescopic cover fitting over the same, said body of the box having a bottom with hinged sides marginally secured whereby said sides may occupy a vertical or downturned position with relation to said bottom, a bottom tray located within said body of the box and resting upon the bottom of said body of the box, and other separate and removable twin trays located above said bottom tray and resting thereon, each of said removable trays lmving;- with said bottom tray a combined depth substantially equal to the height of said sides when occupying a vertical position, each of said removable trays presenting also a bottom area substantially equal to the area presented by said sides when occupying a downturned position,
bottom of said body of the box, and other sepa 'ate and removable twin trays located above said bottom tray and resting thereon. each of removable trays having with said bottom tray a combined depth substantially equal to the height of said sides when occupying a vertical position, each of said removable trays presenting also a bottom area substantially equal to the area pre sented by said sides when occupying a downturned position, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
A box having a body and telescopic cover fitting over the same, said body of the box comprising a bottom, vertical fixed ends and hingeo sides marginally secured to said bottom whereby said sides may occupy an upturned or downturned position with relation to said bottom and said fixed ends, a tray located within said body of the box between the fixed ends thereof, and other separate and removable trays likewise located therein and which separate trays when removed are adapted to rest upon said sides of the box when occupying a. downturned position as aforesaid.
