HANDLE FOR VALISE$.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 8, 1914.
Application filed January 30, 1914. Serial No. 815,374.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, COLIN GRANT, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Jackson, in the county of Jackson and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Handles for Valises, of which the following is a specification, reference being-had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to handles for valises, and the primary object of my invention is to furnish a satchel, suit case, or other valise with a detachable handle that permits of an emergency handle being easily and quickly substituted for the detachable handle, should the same be broken or rendered useless for the purposes intended.
Another object of this invention is to provide an emergency handle for valises that can be readily used in connection with straps, eyes or the handle hold fast devices of various types of valises. y
A further object of this invention is to provide a simple, durable and inexpensive handle for valises that presents a neat appearance, consists of comparatively few parts easy to assemble, and permits of a valise being carried Without the hand being injured or unduly fatigued.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention resides in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed.
Reference will now be had to the drawing, wherein- Figure 1 is a plan of the handle partly broken away, illustrating the same in connection with a handle hold fast device comprising links or eyes; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same; Fig. 3 is a plan of the handle, partly broken away, illustrating the same in connection with valise straps; Fig. 4: is a longitudinal sectional View of the same; Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a portion of a locking bar; Fig. 6 is a cross sectional view of the handle, and Fig. 7 is an enlarged perspective view of a rivet used in connection with the handle.
Reference will first be had to Figs. 1 and 2, illustrating a handle designed for valises having links or eyes 1 held in engagement with the wall 2 of a valise by straps 3 riveted or otherwise connected to the Wall 2, as at 4. The handle comprises a strap 5 having the ends thereof bent andreturned upon the strap to provide loops 6 that engage the links or eyes 1.. The returned ends of the strap 5 are provided with slots or elongated openings 7, and inclosing said strap is a padded casing 8 that has the central portion thereof swelled or otherwise shaped to provide a convenient hand grip. The casing 8 is made of leather or other durable material that will harmonize with the valise to which the handle is connected, and said casing is shaped to provide a channel 9 longitudinally of the handle. The cas ing is suitably secured to the strap 5 and at the ends thereof are rivets 10 that protrude through the slots or openings 7 of the returned ends of the strap 5. The shanks of the rivets 10 have washers 11 engaging the casing 8 upon the strap 5 and the inner ends of said rivets are split, as at 12, whereby they can be clenched or upset upon the bottom side of the handle. The outer ends of the rivets 10 are provided with oblong narrow heads 13 having beveled ends for a purpose that will hereinafter appear. To retain the slotted returned ends of the straps 5 upon the rivets 10, a resilient locking bar 141 is employed, said bar having the ends thereof provided with slots or elongated openings 15. The locking bar 141 is adapted to fit in the channel 9 of the casing 8, and suitably secured to said locking bar, as by rivets 16, is a cover 17, which prevents the heads 13 of the rivets 10 from being observed when the lockingbar is placed in position. The cover 17 is made of a material similar to the casing 8, and with the looking bar within the channel 9, the sides of the casing tend to embrace or inclose the same when the handle is gripped. First one end of the locking bar is placed in engagement with a rivet and then the opposite end there- I of, this operation being best performed when the handle is flattened, as far as possible. When the handle is arcuated or curved the outer end walls of the slots or openings 15 of the locking bar 141 engage under the outer ends of the head 13 of the rivets 10 and the locking bar cannot become accidentally displaced, especially when a valise is being carried.
In Figs. 3 and 1 there is illustrated a handle especially designed for valises having straps 18 adapted to be engaged by tabs 19. The inner ends of the tabs 19 have oblong openings or slots 20 to receive the outer ends of the rivets l0 and in this instance the ends of the strap 5 extend through the straps 18 under the tabs 19, as best shown in Fig. 4:. The same type of locking bar can be employed for retaining the inner ends of the tabs 19 in engagement with the rivets 10.
From the foregoing it will be observed that I have devised a detachable handle that can be used in connection with various grades of valises, it being the common practice to use the metallic straps 18 in connection with cheap suit cases and the links or eyes 1. in connection with the best grade of valises. The construction of the handle and the arrangement of the locking bar is such that under ordinary circumstances it would be practically impossible to detect that the handle is detachable. It is possible to carry an emergency handle in the grip whereby it can be easily and quickly placed in position should the ordinary handle of the valise be broken or impaired to that extent as to render the same useless. Since the casing 8 is flexible it will readily conform to the palm of the hand and permit of a valise being easily carried.
The preferred embodiments of my invention have been illustrated, but it is to be understood that the structural elements are susceptible to such variations and modifications as fall within the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is 1. The combination with the handle hold fast devices of a valise, of a handle, means including rivets carried by the ends thereof and adapted to detachably retain said handie in engagement with the hold fast devices, and detachable means engaging said rivets for locking said handle against accidental displacement relatively to said hold fast devices.
2. The combination with the handle hold fast devices of a valise, of a handle, means including rivets at the ends thereof for retaining said handle in engagement with said hold fast devices, and a flexible locking bar detachably mounted upon said handle and engaging said rivets and adapted to lock said handle.
3. The combination with the handle hold fast devices of a valise, of a flexible channel shaped handle adapted to have the ends thereof connected to said hold fast'devices, a flexible locking bar adapted to fit in said handle and lock said handle relatively to said hold fast devices, and a cover carried by said bar and extending throughout the length thereof.
t. In a valise handle, the combination with the handle hold fast devices of a valise, of a flexible channel shaped handle adapted to have the ends thereof connected to said hold fast devices, means carried by the ends of said handle for retaining said handle in engagement with said devices,-
and means detachably mounted upon said handle for simultaneously inclosing the first mentioned means and locking said handle in engagement with said hold fast devices.
5. In a handle for valises, the combination with handle hold fast devices, of a strap adapted to have the ends thereof placed in engagement with said hold fast devices, rivets carried by said strap and adapted to retain the ends thereof in engagement with said hold fast devices, a locking bar having the ends thereof detachably engaging said rivets to lock said handle relatively to said hold fast devices, and means in connection with said locking bar for inclosing the outer ends of said rivets.
6. The combination with a valise having handle links, of a strap having the ends thereof extending through said links and returned upon said strap, means carried by said strap for detachably holding the returned ends thereof, and a locking bar adapted to lock the returned ends of said strap in engagement therewith.
7. The combination with the handle hold fast devices of a valise, of a flexible channel shaped handle, and a locking bar detachably mounted in the channel of said handle and adapted to lock the ends thereof in engagement with said hold fast devices.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
COLIN GRANT.
