SOUND-PRODUCING INSTRUMENT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 8, 19114.
- Application filed. June 11, 1914. Serial No. 844,432.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RICHARD TIKIJIAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at W'aterbury, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented cer tain new and useful Improvements in Sound- Producing Instruments; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to whistles and in particular whistles for imitating the chirps and sounds made by birds.
One of the objects of my invention is to give a device by which different sounds can be made in a simple and convenient manner.
Another object of my device is to give a device that will give different sounds of clear tone and strong volume.
WVith these and other objects in view to be developed as the specification is enlarged upon, I shall proceed to describe my invention in which a preferred embodiment is shown and illustrated, but it must be understood that I am not limited to but what falls within the scope of the claim appended hereto.
Similar characters of reference refer to similar parts in the drawings, in which,
Figure 1 is a perspective elevation of my device. Fig. 2 is a vertical section therethrough, showing the interior arrangement.
In the drawings, I have an integral bottom portion 1 composed of crockery or china Ware having a base portion 2 adapted to support the device in upright position when not in use, the enlarged bowl portion 3, the neck portion 4: and a conical portion 5. Projecting from my bottom portion 3 is a memher 6 having an orifice 7 therethrough and at one portion of my arm 6 near the mouth piece 8 thereof, I indent a recess or groove 9, said recess communicating as at 10 with the orifice 7. In the center of my bowl 3, I have a chamber 11, said chamber being approximately egg-shaped in contour and communieating with the orifice 9 through the member 6. Vertically communicating with my chamber 11 and running through my neck 4 is an orifice 12 the same acting as a vent from the chamber 11. Communicating with this orifice 12 is my conical and expanding hollow mouth section 13 formed by the member 5.
My device is blown upon from the mouth 8, a sound is produced therefrom, said sound being given tone and volume by means of the chamber 11. Owing to the arrangement of my vent therefrom and the conical portion 5 thereto, by properly manipulating my hand thereover to either partially close the conical portion or to rapidly slap over the same I can break the sound which I produce up into a number of peculiar tones which by little practice I can make to resemble or imitate birds, regulating the volume thereof by the strength with which I blow through the member 6.
I have produced by this device a neat structure, a simple structure and one with which a great deal of amusement can be received from, as well as an instrument by which children can be properly instructed as to the proper calls or whistles of different birds, thereby making it a valuable educational instrument.
WVhat I claim as new is:
A whistle comprising; a body portion having a chamber therein, a base portion supporting said body portion in an upright position, a projecting neck portion having an orifice communicating with said chamber, a conical portion extending from said neck and communicating with said orifice, and a second projecting portion having an orifice longitudinally running therethrough and communicating with said chamber, said last mentioned portion having a recess near the outer end communicating with said last mentioned orifice.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
RICHARD TIKIJIAN;
Vitnesses WILLIAM K. LAWLER, PAUL SUMMA.
