To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, JOHN Pn'rnnsox, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Faribault, in the county of Rice and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Index-Tabs, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to index cards for filing cabinets and particularly to the tabs therefor.

The object of my invention is to provide a device preferably used in connection with the index tab for separating the leaves in the file from the divisional cards on which the tabs are mounted. Oftentimes it is desirable to examine the memoranda on a sales slip in a file, and as these slips are made of thin paper it often happens that the slip will adhere to the divisional card and render it diflicult of examination.

My improvement consists generally in means for separating the divisional card and the adjacent sales slip, so that the figures on the sales slip will be exposed.

In the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a trans verse sectional view through a sales slip file embodying my invention, Fig. 2 is a view taken at right angles substantially to the sectional line of Fig. 1, Fig. 3 is a perspective view, Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the clip or tab that is mounted on the divisional card with the means for separating the sales slips from the card.

In the drawings, 2represents a filing cabinet, 3 a divisional card therein, 4: a quantity of sales slips.

The divisional cards as usual in devices of this kind, project above the sales slips and are provided with metal clips 5, bearing figures or letters and usually denominated as tabs for indexing the file. The clip has a jaw 6 and a jaw 7 which are adapted to grip the upper edge of the divisional card. The jaw 7 has a comparatively long, flexible extension 8 thereon, which is shown in Fig. 2 as adapted to bear on the adjacent sales slip and press it away from the divisional card sufficiently to allow the memoranda or figures on the sales slip to be plainly visible without removing the slip from the file. The jaw 7 preferably has an offset formed therein opposite the jaw 6 and forming a space between the jaws at this point that is adapted to receive the upper edge of the divisional card. The two jaws at this point lie in substantially parallel planes and lateral pressure on the upper ends of the jaws will bend the divisional card on which they are mounted in one direction, while the extension 8 will force the sales slips away from the card a suflicient distance to expose the figures thereon.

The attachment is preferably made of metal and of the length shown, but I do not confine myself to this precise form as in various ways the details of construction may be modified and still be within the scope of my invention.

I claim 1. The combination, with a sales slip file having divisional card therein adapted to separate groups of duplicate sales slips, of a clip mounted on the edge of said divisional card and comprising a comparatively long jaw adapted to extend between the card and the adjacent slips, a second jaw carried by said first named jaw and having its lower portion in parallel relation substantially with said first named jaw and spaced therefrom sufficiently to receive the edge of the divisional card inserted between them, lateral pressure on the outer ends of said jaws operating to bend said card in one direction and force the inner end of said first named jaw against said slips at one side to separate them fromsaid card.

2. The combination, with a filing case and the divisional cards therein between which the sales slips are placed, of a clip mounted on the upper. edge of a divisional card and comprising a comparatively long jaw having an offset therein near its upper end and a short jaw secured at its upper end to the corresponding end of said long jaw and extending substantially parallel with said long jaw and opposing said offset portion, a space being provided between said ofl'set portion and said short jaw to receive the upper edge of a divisional card, lateral pressure on the upper portion of said jaws forcing said long jaw against the sales slips to separate them from said divisional card.
