To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EMERALD E. JONES, a subject of the King of Great Britain, and a resident of the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain newl and` useful Improvements in Guards for lVoodworking-Machines, of which the following is a speciication.
My invention relates to guards .for wood working machines andmore specifically to a device designed for use upon machines of this character to protect the hands of the operator against injury through contact with the cutting element of the machine.
The object of my invention is the production of a guard of the character mentioned which will be adapted for both transverse and vertical movement in order to permit ot the work passing either at the inner end thereof or under the guard, depending upon the character of the work which is beingfacted upon.
A further object is the production of a guard as mentioned which will be of durable and economical construction and which by reason of the movement permitted the same, as just mentioned, will be of high eiiiciency in use.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
With these objects in view my invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
'I he invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which,
Figure 1 is a top plan view of a wood working machine equipped with a guard embodying my invention, Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the construction shown in Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail section takenon substantially line m-w of Fig. 1.
Referring now to the drawing I have shown therein a wood working machine of conventional design consisting of a table 1 at the rearward edge of which is provided the work guide or fence 2. Arranged intermediate the ends of the table 1 is the rotary cutting element 3 which protrudes through a transversely extending opening or slot 4 provided in the table top as shown.
The guard which coperates with the cutting element 3 consists in its preferred form of an elongated substantially rectangular plate 5 which is transversely curved or arched in order tospan the opening 4 and guard the blades lof the. cutting element 3 without contacting therewith. Said guard plate 5, when in use, is normally positioned with its longitudinal edges contacting with the upper side of table 1 at either side of opening4.
The outer end of guard plate 5 is pivote ally connected. at 6 with the corresponding ends of elongated tubular arms which extend substantially horizontally along the front edge of table 1, said arms being spaced from and disposed parallelwith each other. The opposite ends of said arms are pivotally connected at S with a member 9 which is secured to the outer end of a stud 10 the rearward end ofwhich is rockingly mounted in bearing lugs 11 projecting from a plate 12 which is secured by bolts 12 to one end of table 1.
IVith the arrangement set forth it will be seen that the arms 7 are so connected with the table 1 as to permit of vertical swinging thereof about the stud 10 and horizontal swinging about the pivotal points 8. This being so it will be seen that the guard plate `5 is so supported as to permit of free vertical as well as transverse movement relative to the table 1. Also the arrangement is such that said plate will normally assume a position at its lower terminal of vertical movement or in contact with the table 1 by gravity. A helical tension spring 13 arranged between the arms 7 and connected at its respective ends with said arms serves to normally hold the guard plate 5A at its inner terminal of horizontal or transverse movement, said plate being however only yieldingly held so as to permit ofl free movement either vertically or transversely.`
Provided at the inner end of guard plate 5 is a deflector bar 14 4having a laterally and forwardly inclined surface 14 for engagement by work A passed through the machine over the table 1 in order to move or deflect the guard plate 5 laterally or transversely so as to permit of the passage of the work as will be readily understood. Also provided at the inner end of guard plate 5 is a bar 15 the under side 15 of which as well as and upwardly, as clearly shown in Fig. 2
for engagement with work B which is passed through the machine over the table 1 in order to move the guard plate vertically to permit of the passage of the work as will be readily understood. A brace rod 16 coperates with the bars 14 and 15 for reinforcement. The rearward or inner ends of all of said bars are connected with the guard plate by screws, and the inner ends of bars 14 and 15 are preferably countersunlr in the under side of said guard plate as clearly shown in Fig. 3. With this arrangement then it will be seen that the guard will be deflected laterally by work which is comparatively high and narrow and vertically by work which is comparatively wide and low or thin, the cutting element, with this arrangement, being guarded by the plate 5 at all times.
While l have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself oi such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention what i. claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. The combination with the table and cutting element oi a wood working machine, of a guard arranged above said cutting element; a connection between said guard and f l said table permitting of' free movement of said guard vertically and transversely of said table, said connection comprising a pair of arms having corresponding ends mounted to permit of vertical and horizontal swinging of said arms; and a pivotal con- 40 nection between the opposite ends of said arms and said guard, substantially as described.
2. The combination with the table and cutting element of a wood working machine, of a guard arranged above said cutting element and adapted normally to rest upon said table connection between said guard and said table permitting of free movement of said guard vertically and transversely of said table, said connection comprising a pair of' substantially horizontally disposed elongated spaced parallel arms having corresponding ends mounted to permit of vertical and horizontal swinging of said arms; a pivotal connection between the opposite ends of said arms and said guard; and resilient means connected with said arms to normally yieldingly7 hold said guard at its inner terminal of transverse movement, substantially as described.
3. rlhe combination with the table and cutting element of a wood working machine7 of a guard arranged above said cutting element and adapted normally to rest upon said table; a connectionbetween said guard and said table permitting of free movement of said guard vertically and transversely of said table, said connection comprising a pair of substantially horizontally disposed elongated spaced parallel arms having corresponding ends mounted to permit of vertical and horizontal swinging of' said arms; a pivotal connection between the opposite ends of said arms and said guard; and a helical tension spring arranged between and having its opposite ends connected respectively with said arms for normally yieldingly holding said guard at its inner terminal of transverse movement, substantially as described.
. The combination with the table and cutting element of a wood working machine,
of a guard arranged above said cutting element; a connection between said guardand said table permitting of free movement of said guard vertically and transversely of said table, said connection comprising a pair of arms having corresponding ends mounted to permit of vertical and horizontal swinging of said arms; a pivotal connection between the opposite ends of said arms and said guard; and vertically and horizontally inclined work deflecting surfaces provided at the inner end of said guard, substantially as described.
