To all whom it may concern: I I
Be it known that I, DANIEL"W..'S MITH, a citizen of the :U nited States, residlng at Machias, in the county of Washington and State of Maine, have invente'dcertain new and useful Improvements in Bucksaws, and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to buck saws and has for its object the provision of a frame in which the cross bar is entirely eliminated, thereby permitting the cutting of logs hava far greater diameter than the logs which may be cut with the ordinary buck saws which are in use at the present time.
Another object of my invention is to provide a buck saw frame which is constructed of metal and is substantially arched to give the greatest strength in the frame construction and to entirely eliminate any possibility of the frame becoming warped and in other ways causing numerous annoyances to the operator.
A further object of my invention is to provide a buck saw frame in which all tendency to side buckling is eliminated owing to a novel form of ad usting means provided for the frame.
A still further-object of my invention is to provide a frame which is cheap to manufacture, easily assembled and one which gives the maximum of wear with the minimum loss.
To this end my invention resides in the novel construction and combination of parts to be hereinafter described and supplemented by the accompanying drawing which forms a part of this application and in which:

My invention comprises a buck saw composed of two substantially arched frame members 1 and 2, the member 1 being less arched than the member 2 and designed to act as a handle for the frame. Between the lower end of the member 2 and connected to the handle member 1 is an ordinary saw blade 3. Any suitable form of connection for this blade member may be used as it forms no part of my invention.

The upper portions of the frame members owing to their archedconstruction are extended toward each other and have their iadjacentends upturned, the end of the member 1 being bent straight upward as designated at 4 and provided at'its upperend with a handlepicce 5.' The adjacent up turned end 6 of the platc2 is bent slightly "backward'upon itself and extending through each of these upturned ends is a bolt 7 having a nut threaded on its outer end to draw the two ends together. Spaced slightly below the bolt 7 is a pair of transversely extending slots 8 in the upturned ends 4 and 61 These slots are in alinement and positioned within these slots and extending between the ends 4 and 6 is a guide member or key 9 provided at the central portion with a laterally projecting stud or pin 10 which is adapted to act as a fulcrum point for the locking movement of the two upturned ends when they are drawn together by action of the nut on the bolt 7.
The key 9 is held snugly by the side walls of the slots 8. This positioning of the members 9 prevents any transverse movement of the frame which would tend to side buckling. The slots 8 are of sufiicient height as to allow free play of the frame members in respect to the key when the same are rocked either toward or away one another on the fulcrum 10. It is to be understood also that the upper ends are so constructed as to permit play of the moving ends over the bolt 7 extending therebetween.
The upturned ends of the two frame n1embers meet at a point spaced from the middle of the frame and adjacent the handle end of the saw frame as clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings. Owing to the arched construction of my frame, it can be readily seen that the strength of the frame is materially increased and the saw may be utilized fo'r'cutting logs of larger dimensions than those that can be cut by the use of the ordinary saw frame having a cross bar extending between the handles as in the present device. The cutting action of the blade will not be in any way impeded until the top of the saw frame comes in contact with the log being operated upon.
