BERNARD LEWIS JOHNSON, 0F GOODHUE, MINNE$OTAF noon-LATCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed February 19', 1913. Serial No. 749,333.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, BERNARD L. JOHXSON, a citizen of the UnitedStates, anda resident of Goodhue, in the county of Goodhue and State of Minnesota, have invented a new and Improved Door-Latch, of which the following is a full, clear,1.and exact description.
My invention is intended more particularly for embodiment in the latches of barn doors. I 7
The object of my invention is to provide a latch of novel form adapted to be operated from either sideof the door, and in which the handlepart, at the interior of the door,
will lie within the plane of the door so as to clear the casing in the sliding of the door.
A. further object of the invention is to provide an improved outer handle, and means for ad'justably securing the same on the latch spindle, as well as an improved means for fastening the latch on the spindle. The invention will be more particularly explained in the specific description herein after given.
Reference is to behad to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of my improved latch, showing the same applied; Fig. 2 is a view of the inner end of the latch and the adjacent door part; Fig. 3 is a horizontal section on the line 33 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 4 is a transverse vertical section on the line 4. 1 of Fig. l.
The latch bar. 10, carried by the door 11 which is supported in any approved manner, has a latch head 10 to engage the catch 12,
which is formed on a-plate 18 secured to the door frame 14:. The latch spindle 15 is threaded at its outer end as at 15 and-said latch bar is formed withan eye having a thread to engage the thread of the spindle to'lock the handle at different distances from the transverse handle 15, according to the thickness of the door 11. A wear plate 16 may be applied to the face of the-door and having an opening for the passage of the spindle 15. The outer handle 17 has also a threaded opening to engage the threads of the spindle,-and is adapted to be brought up against the outer face of the latch bar 10, to bind against the latter, the handle thus constituting a nut 17. The handle is offset as at 17, sothat the free end is properly secured, as by screws 21. I
.By the described construction the spindle spaced from thefaceof the door v11;v I
loclenut 18 may ioe placed on the spindle 15, outside of the outerv handle. a The inner handle 15 may be formed in any suitable manner, but I prefer to so bend- Patented Deal, 1914. a
the spindle as to give the inner end the form of a T-head. The inner face of the door is mortised to produce a recess '19, in which the handle 15 is received within the plane of the inner face of the door, so that the handle will not catch against the door casing or the like in the sliding of the door. In the bottomof the recess 19 a wear plate 20 may be 15) may be made to fit any door within its total capacity, and the latch bar 10 may be turned to properly space the same from the inner handle 15*, according to the thickness of the particular door. The handle 17, with its nut 17", jams against the outer .faceof the latch bar in whatever position the latter has been placed, and the lock nut 18 forms an additional means for holding the'outer handle in a fixed position relatively to the latch so that the rocking of the handle will raise or lower the latch.
The provision of the handle 1-7 as an element separate from the latch bar, enables me to dispose the handle in various angular positions relatively to the latch bar, and by the, provision of the nut formation 17, the handle constitutes a binding 'nut or look nut for the latch bar.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent: i
1. 'A door latch, comprising a latch spindle having a handle at one end and threaded at the other end, a latch bar having a threaded opening engagingthe threads of the spindle to adjust the latch axially rela-' tively to the mentioned handle, a second handle having a threaded opening and screwing onto the threaded spindle to jamb against the latch bar, said second handle being offset, and a lock nut screwing onto the spindle outside of the said handle.
2. The combination with a door having a mortise in the inner face thereof, and a spindle opening communicating with said mortise, of a latch spindle extending through said opening and having a head lying within the plane of the door, a wear plate in the bottom of the mortise surrounding the spindle opening and spindle, be-
neath the hrindle thereof, a Wear plate on the door surrounding the spindle at the ing on the threaded spindle outside of the said second handle.
3. A door latch, comprising a latch bar having a threaded opening, a latch spindle on which said bar is screwed, and a handle having one end in the form of a nut screwing on the said spindle against the latch bar to bind the two in locked position on the spindle.
i, A door latch, comprising a spindle having a handle at one end and threaded at the opposite end, a door latch axially movable on said spindle, and a second handle screwing on the spindle and adapted to bear against the latch bar.
5. A latch, comprising a spindle having a handle at one end, a latch bar carried by said spindle, to be rocked by the latter, a
second handle on the spindle, said latch bar and second handle being movable axially on the spindle to vary their distance from the first mentioned handle, and means ior locking the latch bar and second handle in adj usted position.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification inthe presence of two subscribing witnesses.
BERNARD LEWIS JOHNSON.
