Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, FRANK S. HARRING- TON, a citizen of'the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, State and county of New York, have invented a Tool,of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Among the principal objects which .the present invention has in view are: to provide a separable head, theparts whereof are readily and economically constructed to strengthen the assembled tool; and to provide for wearonthe joined parts of said tool.
In the drawingsFigure 1 is a side view of a tool head. and pick points disposed in service relation thereto, said head and points being constructed and arranged in accordance with the present invention, the near side plate of the head being partially removed to disclose the interior structure of the far side of the plate; Fig. 2 is a detailed view showing inseparated relation a pick point adapted for mounting in the herein disclosed head; Fig.3 is a detailed view on an enlarged scale in section taken as on the line 33 in Fig. 1 Fig. 4 is a View similar in arrangement to Fig. 1 showing a modified form of the tool head and pick points therefor; Fig. 5 is a detailed view showing in isolated relation one of the pick points designed for use in the head shown in Fig. 4; Fig. 6 is a detailed view on an enlarged scale showing a section taken as on the line 6-6 in Fig. 4.
As seen in the accompanying drawings, the tool head therein disclosed is composed of two sides or plates 11 and 12. In Fig. 1 of the drawings the plate 11 shown therein as uppermost is cut away to disclose the inner formation of the lateral extensions 13, which extensions are preferablv identical in both plates. The extensions 13 project laterallv from the main body of the plates 11 and 12, which are curved at their inner surfaces to form an eyelet to receive the haft or handle 14. The main body of the plates 11 and 12 adjacent the said eye formed thereby is maintained in thickness to bear surface to surface when the plates are turned by the bolts 15 and nuts 16 thereof upon the pick points 17 or other tool element. The body of the plates 11 and 12 adjacent the eyelet for the haft 14 have formed therein pasnew and Improved sages such as designated in Fig. 1 by the numeral 18. To fit snugly within thepassages 18 the pick points 17 are provided with end projections 19. The sides and edges of the projections 19 are preferably parallel, and are terminated by a square shoulder 20 at each side tions, and extending therefrom to the outer edges of each pick point 17. projections 19 each pick point is provided with grooves 21, said grooves being oppositely disposed or arranged in alinement on opposite sides of the points.
The grooves 21 are provided to receive the guide pads 22 with wh ch the extensions 13 are each furnished. The pads 22 have each a perforation 23, the perforations being alined when the plates 11 and 12 are disposed in service relation. The perforations 23 are provided to hold the bolts 15 which clamp the plates together, and upon the pick points 17. The reduced metal between the grooves 21 is each provided'with an elongated slot 24 which also serves as a receptacle or passage through which the bolts 15 extend.
vlVhen provided with the plates 11 and .12, the pick points 17. the bolts 15 and nuts 16 the tool is assembled for service by passing the said bolts through the perforations 23 and slots 24 of the plates 11 and-12 and pick points 17. The nuts 16 are then adjusted and tightened. drawing the plates '11 and 12 together. and clamping the samerigidly upon the pick points 17. It will then be seen that the projections 19 fit snugly within the passages 18, while the shoulders 20 formed in the sides thereof rest against corresponding shoulders formed in the heavy part of the plates 1.1 and 12. Thereafter. when operating the tool. the blow is principallv received upon the said shoulders 20 and the correspondinc shoulders against which the same hear. The. method of clamping the plates 11 and 12 upon the pick points 17 can be best seen in Fig. 3 of the drawings.
In Figs. 1 to 6. inclusive. the modified form of the invention is disclosed. The modification consists in providing in the plates 25 and 26 tapered passages 27. into which are extended. tapering ends 28 or Adj acent the of the said projecpick points 29. The tool head illustrated in elongated cheek pieces 30 which reinforce or strengthen the grip of the eyelet or plates on the haft or handle 31.
While I have herein described a tool head constructed and arranged as in accordance with the present invention, as used in conjunction with the pick points, it will be understood that any other suitable tool point or plate may be substituted therefor, such as adzes, axes or tamps without varying the spirit of the present invention.
Claims.
1. A tool as characterized, embodying a plurality of duplicate plates having body portions, wherein are formed half sections of a bait eye, said plates being each provided with lateral extensions of relatively reduced thickness, said extensions being each provided with relatively low bosses, said bosses being alined when said plates are united and said bosses having alined perforations to receive the fastening bolts for said plates; a plurality of pick points adapted to fit between said extensions, each of said pick points being provided with laterally disposed grooves to engage said bosses, said grooves being perforated to form a passage for the fastening bolts of said plates; and screw-threaded bolts for drawing said plates and the extensions thereof rigidly upon said pick points.
2. A tool as chaacterized, embodying a plurality of duplicate plates having body portions, wherein are formed half sections of a haft eye, said plates being each provided with lateral extensions of relatively reduced thickness, said extensions being each provided with relatively low bosses, said bosses being alined when said plates are united and said bosses having alined perforations to receive the fastening bolts for said plates, said plates being each pro vided with elongated passages extending between and flush with the inner surfaces of said extension to form openings to the eyelet formed by said plates when joined, said passages being 'ali'ned with said bosses; a plurality of pick points having each on the opposite sides thereof and adjacent the end thereof, indented grooves to engage said bosses, said pick points being further provided with end projections to fit in said passages; and fastening members for uniting the said plates to clamp the same on said pick points, said fastenings being extensible to draw upon said projections and the bottom of the grooves formed in said pick points.
