Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 16, 1914.
Application filed November 14, 1912. Serial No. 731,313.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARVEY C. NUGENT, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of l/Vinslow, in the county of Kitsap and State of Washington, have invented a new and Improved Saw, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to machinery or tools for cutting wood or other materials, and has particular reference to the construction of saws whereby the serrated portion or edge may be easily removed from the body or back to which the handle or other operating means may be applied and the same being so arranged as to be either replaced or have another blade of a different character substituted therefor.
The object of the invention is to so im prove this class of devices as to make it easier for the cutting edge to be removed and replaced than has heretofore been usual.
The foregoing and other objects of the invention will hereinafter be more fully described and claimed and illustrated in the drawings accompanying this specification in which like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views, and in which Figure 1 is a side view of a fragment of a saw made in accordance with this invention; Fig. 2 is a similar view of the same with the blade detached from the back; Fig. 3 is a side view of a detail of the saw; and Figs. 1 and 5 are transverse sectional details on the line H and 5-5, respectively, of Fig. 3.
As illustrated in the drawings, it will appear that this invention contemplates the construction of a saw back 10 of any suitable form, the same being provided along one edge with a tongue 11. The tongue is preferably so constructed as to lie in the plane coinciding with the center of the back, or in other words, the tongue is of a construction sufliciently thinner than the body of the back and so arranged as to provide shoulders 12. The back also is provided with a series of transverse holes or sockets 13 of any suitable form, but indicated as circular, and so arranged with respect to the back and tongue as to extend into each of said parts to about the same extent.
The serrated portion or blade 1 1 consists of a comparatively narrow strip adapted, by means of a groove 15, to receive the aforesaid tongue 11 and to impinge against said shoulders 12. The webbed portions 16 of the blade which embrace the tongue 11 are shown as continuous throughout their length and at the places where they span the holes 13 are adapted to be swaged or otherwise bent inwardly as indicated at 16 whereby the blade is placed substantially secured to the back 10 and so held in place for operation. By inserting or driving a punch or other tool into and through the open portion of the shoulders 18, the blade may easily be forced from its interlocking engagement with said back and after being so removed may be replaced or another blade of different character of teeth may be substituted in its place. It will be noted, therefore, that a single saw back may be employed for various kinds of work by simply providing a set of as many different types of blades or teeth as may be required.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent In a saw, the combination of a back and a removable blade therefor, the back having a tongue projecting centrally from one edge thereof and forming opposite shoulders, said back also having a series of holes therethrough, said holes being intersected by said shoulders and the blade having a pair of parallel webs spaced from each other to receive said back tongue, the portions of the webs overlapping the portions'of the tongue adjacent to said holes beingadapted to be swaged into parts of said holes leaving the other parts open, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the Presence of two subscribing witnesses.
HARVEY GRESWELL NUGENT. Witnesses:
O. L. STANLEY, O. L. DAVISON.
