Description

dbtiteh irttei JOSEPH MARSHALL, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
Letters Patent No. 111,955, dated February 21, 1871; antedated February 17, 1871.
IMPROVEMENT IN BATHlNG-BRUSHES.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all 'whom it may concern Be it known that I, J osErH bLynsHALn, of Brooklyn, in lthe county of Kings and State of New York, have invented anew and improved Bathing-Brush;
`and I do hereby declare that the following is a full,
clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming` part of this specification.
My invention relates to that class of brushes for bathers which have a piece ot'spouge arranged in the midst of the bristles and It consists in certain improvements, which willfirst be described in connection with all that is necessary to a full understanding thereof, and then clearly specified iu the claim.
The drawing represents a vertical longitudinal section of a brush which exhibits all my improvements.
A is the bristle-plate;
l, the surrounding bristles;
O O, the back and handle of the brush;
D, a detachable block; and
E, a sponge.
la is a groove in the bristle-plate A, which-is filled with some water-proof material or composition. I preferably employ cement for the purpose.
l) is a screw, which enters from the back O, and is, therefore, readily detachable.
c is a wire w L:nd about the sponge to keep it in a groove of block I).
To prevent the water from entering between the bristle-plate and bac-k of the brush, where it would soak and swell the wood, rust and rot the wire-work, and cause the bristles to fall out, I use the groored plate A and the water-prooiI composition.
To enable the sponge, which requires frequent removal and replacement, to be readily taken ont, I pass the long screw b through the back C, bristle-plate A,
and partly through the sponge-block D. Its head is conntersunk in the back U so as to be flush with the external surface thereof.
I am aware that sponges have been used in the midst ot' bristles, and also that au independent bristleblock and sponge-holder are not new,iu connection with a brush. I do not, theretbre, lay any claim to them as a part ot' my invention; but
That I do esteem to be new, and desire to protect by Letters Patent, is-
A bathing-brush haring a back and bristles combined with a bristle-plate having the groove a filled with water-proof composition7 the sponge-holder B detaehably fastened by the screw b, and the sponge E clamped in a groove of the holder D by a wire, c, al1 relatively arranged and puttogether to form an improved article ot manufacture.
JOSEPH MARSHALL.
