In tho wall at tho Murine cylinder l, which is providcd with tho usual water jacket 52, arranged a receptacle 3 in lvhich is ii'isertcd a plug having; a. longitudinal born to receive a needlc valve 'llholinncr cud of the receptacle is conical, to form a seat for the conical tip ll of the valve, which controls tho port 7 opening from the rcceptzwlevinto tho cylinder 1. The two sets of holes deliver jets of oil and air respectively to the mixing cluuubor ll. and are preferably so arranged that the jets of oil and air collide, so that the oil is broken up into spray and is thoroughly mixed with the air. In order to still further oonnningle the oil and air, hallling (levh'rcs are introduced into the chambor l; prri'erably in the form of circlun't'crential ribs 18 on the plug, between the rows of holrs 16. Similar ribs 19 may b0 provided on the inner face of the annular uicmbcr ll): prl-lcrahly alternating in position with lho =c on the plug, in, which case the holes I? will be located in the ribs, as shown, in ordor to oppose the holes in the plug. The two sets of ribs lcave an annular. labvrint-hiuc passagc through which the oil and air will be forced by the pressure of the latter when the nrcdle valve is opened. The impact upon the ribs, and the frequent cluinges in dircctiom cause the oil to be still lurthcr subdivided and thoroughly mixed with the air, so that when the charge enters the cylinder it is in a condition to burn promptly and steadily.
Tn accordance with the provisions of the patent statutes, I have described the prim oiple oi ope ation of my invention, together with the apparatus which I now consider to reprcscnt the/best embodiment thereof; but I dcsire to have it understood that the apparatus shown is only illustrative, and that tho invention can be carried out by other moans.
