Specification of Letters Patent.
.011. AND GAS BURNER.
Patented Jan. 24., 1911.
Application filed March 8, 1906. Serial No. 304,884.
clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this spec1fication,'in which Figure l is a sectional elevation of a burner embodying my invention; Fig. 2 is an end view of the regulating valve dial; Figs. 3 and 4 are sections on the line III-III and 1v 1v rtspectively of Fig. 1; Fig. 5 is a detail view of the nozzle, partly in section and partly in side elevation; Fig. 6 is an end view of the nozzle; and Fig. 7 is a detail sectional View of a modification.
My invention is designed to provide a simple and efficient burner adaptedfor use with either oil or gas as a fuel; and it consists in the novel construction, arrangement and combination of parts all substantially as hereinafter described and pointed out in the appended claim. In the drawings, the numeral 2 designates a hollow shell or casing having a transverse.
interior partition 3 located near one end, and an internal spider 4 near the opposite end, said partition and spider dividing the interior of the shell into a steam chamber 5, an air or gas chamber 6, and'a mixing and combustion chamber 7 the latter having a contracted discharge or nozzle ortion 8.
9 designates an oil supply 'pipe which extends centrally within the bodyportion 2, through a stufling box 10 and through the partition 3 and spider 4, being inclosed between said partition and spider by surrounding tube 11 which is secured atits rear end to the partition 3 and whose forward end extends beyond the spider 4 and terminates in a nozzle portionl2; The tube 11 opens at its rear end into the steam chamben 5, and is of suflicient diameter to leavea surrounding space around the oil supply tube cates the projections 14 which serve to center the nozzle within the tube 11 and provide spaces for the escape of the steam into the mixing and. combustion space 7. The inner walls of these spaces may be parallel with the axis of the burner, as shown in Fig. 5 or they may be parallel with the inner wall12 of the contracted nozzle portion 12, as shown in Fig. 7 so that they will tend to centrally deflect or divert the jets of steam which pass therethrough, and thereby alter the proportion of oil drawn through the nozzle 13.
The oil is supplied to the pipe.9. by the pipe 15, and the feed is regulated by means of aneedle valve 16. The stem of this valve is provided with a pointer 18 which, in connection with a fixed dial plate 17, indiosit-ion of the valve and forms means for etermining the proper feed.
Steam is admitted to the chamber 5 through the inlet ports 19. In the drawing I have shown two of these ports located opposite to each other, but may use one only.
20 designates an air or'gas inlet extension of the body portion 2, which opens into the chamber 6. The air thus supplied passes through the openings of the spider 4 into the combustion space 7 where it comes in contact with the oil and steam as the latter are brought together. Theair inlet extension 20 is-provided with a lateral opening, normally closed by a screw plug 21, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 1, and which provides means for the connection thereto of a as pipe, should .it be desired to use gas as a el. The area of the inlet passage is great enou h to admit a sufficient volume of gas for this urpose.
The a vantages of my invention consist in the simplicity of the constructiomand in the efficiency of the burner for use with either oil or, gas as a fuel, so that by changing the angle of the steam orifices either a reducing or oxidizing flame may be pro-' dueed, by changing the injector efiect on the oil'in pipe 9.
What I claim 'is:-
In a burner; the combination of a casing having a transverse partition and a transverse spider support dividing the casing into several chambers, a steam inlet behind the converging mouth of the steam pipe, subpartition and a steam nozzle connected there- 'stantially as described;
to and supported in the spider and having In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set a converging month, an oil supplj tube cenmy hand.v
5 tered and supported in the steam pipe and ROBERT L. FRINK..
provided with a regulating "valve outside Witnesses: the casing, said oil plpe havmg a head with Gno. H. PARMELEE, converging grooves cooperating with the H. M. (301mm.
