Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed December 10, 1913. Serial No. 805,829.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM LANGE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bentley, in the county of Hettinger, State of North Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Door Latches and Holders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a combined door latch and holder.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a door latch of novel construction including a spindle and a holder adapted to be secured to the wall for engagement with the spindle to retain the door in its open position.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of the character described in which the holder may be readily disengaged from the spindle upon rotation of the lat ter.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device for the purpose set forth which is composed of a minimum number of parts, is therefore simple in construction, and is cheap to manufacture.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction and novel combination of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claims hereto appended; it being. understood that various changes in the form, pro portion. size and minor details of construction within the scope of the claimsmay be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.

which is designated as a whole by the reference letter A, and a wall catch which is designated as a whole by the reference letter B. The latch includes a bore 7 which extends inwardly from the outer edge of the door, and communicating with the inner end of this bore is a transverse opening 8 in which a spindle 9 is axially mounted for rotation, one end of the spindle carrying a knob 10 and the other end. being formed with an eye 11, said eye being disposed in the same plane as the spindle and projecting forwardly therefrom. Located in the outer end of the bore 7 is a tubular casing 12, the outer end of said casing terminating in an attaching flange 13, which is secured to the outer edge of the door 5 by any suitable means. The inner end of the casing is formed with an inwardly extending flange 14 constituting a stop and forming a resultant opening 15. Slidably mounted within the casing is a latch bolt 16, the inner end thereof being reduced to form an inwardly extending shank 17, said shank projectin through an opening 15. A guide 18 is fixed to the door 5 and receives the inner end of the shank 17. Disposed around the shank 17 and guide 18 is a U-shaped frame 19 which includes spaced legs 202O and a connecting portion 91, the ends of the legs being fixedly connected to the latch bolt 16 by any suitable means. Disposed aroundthe shank 17 is a coil spring 22, one end thereof bearing against the latch bolt 16 and the other end bearing against the guide 18, said spring causing said latchbolt to be yieldnected to one end of a short chain25i, the.
other end of the chain being suitably connected to the spindle 9. It will thus be observed that upon rotation of the spindle, the
chain 24 will be partially wrapped therearound and at the same time the latch bolt 16, through the medium of the frame 19, will be drawn inwardly against the tension of the spring 22 until said latch bolt contracts with the flange or stop 14. Immediately upon release of the spindle 9, the spring 22 will return the latch bolt 16 to its normal or operative position.
Secured to the wall or support 6 in a position to be engaged by the eye 11 of the spindle 9, is my improved wall catch B. This catch includes an attaching plate 25 which is secured to said wall by any suitable means. This plate is centrally formed with spaced upper and lower guides 26 and 27 which are rectangular in cross section. Slidably mounted in the guide is a gravity catch, which is designated as a whole by the reference numeral 28. This catch incluc es a base 29 which is slidably mounted within the upper and lower guides 27 and which is formed with opposed stops 30-30 which coact with the lower guide 27 to retain said base against further downward movement. Centrally carried by the base 29 is a forwardly extending U-shaped bracket 31 which includes spaced legs 32-32, a connecting portion 33 and spaced clips 3 i-3% extending rearwardly from the connecting portion and secured to the base 29. A supporting rod 35 is carried by the legs 32 of the bracket, and is disposed in spaced relation to the connecting portion 33 thereof. Slidably mounted on the rod 35 is a hook 36 having a rectangular base 37 which has slidable engagement with the connecting portion 33 of the bracket, and serves to prevent the rotation of said hook on the rod. end of the hook is formed with a cam 38, and disposed around the rod 35 on either side of said hook is a coil spring 39. One end of each spring bears against the hook and the other end against a respective leg 32 of the bracket. It will thus be observed that by means of these springs the hook is yieldably held on the rod against sliding movement.
In operation, after the door has been unlatched as above described and swung to its open position, the eye 11 of the spindle 9 will engage the cam 38 of the hook 36, and as a result, elevate the catch 28 to the position shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings. of the drawings. In this position the hook 36 will engage the eye 11, and thereby retain the door in its open position. When it is desired to disengage the holder, the spindle 9. is axially rotated by means of the knob 10, and as a result, the eye 11 of said spindle will engage the hook 30 and cause said hook to slide longitudinally along the supporting rod 35 against the tension of the springs 39. This movement of the spindle is continued until the eye 11 is disengaged from the hook. The door can then be readily closed and the hook will return to its normal position by means of the spring 39.
What is claimed is:
1. The combination of a latch including an axially rotatable spindle adapted to be secured toa door, a member carried by the spindle and a holder including a gravity hook adapted to be secured to a wall and automatically engage with the member carried by the spindle when the door is opened, said latch being yieldably supported for lateral movements and adapted to be disengaged from the spindle carried member upon rotation in one direction of the spindle.
2. The combination of a latch including an axially rotatable spindle adapted to be secured to a door, an eye formed on one end of the spindle, and a catch including a gravity hook adapted to be secured to a wall to automatically engage with the eye when the door is open, said hook being yieldably supported for lateral movements and adapted to be disengaged from the eye uponrotation in one direction of said spindle.
3. In a door wall catch, the combination of an attaching plate, and a gravity latch supported thereon for vertical and transverse movements.
