STEAM-renewal 'a citizen ofthe United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State `of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stea.m-l`urbines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in steam turbines, the object of the invention being to provide a turbine in which the.` steam takes a spiral course engaging the blades or vanes of the rotary element a number of different times, so that the entire force of the steam is utilized.
A further object is to provide a rotary element having a circular series of inclined blades or vanes with a casing, and construct the casing with steam passages which cause the steam to pass around the rotary element in a spiral path, impacting against the blades again and again before exhausting.
A further object is to vary the size or width of the steam passage in the casing, so that as the steam expands, it will be directed through a wider path or passage and be utilized to the fullest extent.
I/Vith these and other objects in View, the invention consists in certain novel feature` of construction and combinations `and arrangements of parts as will be more fully hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims. Y,
In the accompanying drawings: Figure l is a view in vertical longitudinal section illustrating my improvements. Fig. 2 is a `view in transverse section on the line 2-2 of Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a fragmentary view in section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2. Fig. l is a view in section on the horizontal line 4-ll of Fig. l. Fig. 5 isa view on a `reduced scale similar to Fig. l illustrating a modification, and Fig. G is a view in elevation illustrating a battery of turbines on a single shaft.
Referring to Figs. l to fl inclusive, l represents a circular casing supported on a base 2 and inclosing a circular rotary element 3 which is secured to a shaft 4, and is adapted to drive the latter. The rotary element 3 is provided with a circular series of blades or vanes 5 secured on the periphery of the rotary element and located at an angle to the axis of the shaft 4. eral series of transverse passages 7 which in-` crease in width in regular rotation.
In Fig. l, I have illustrated four series of such transverse passages, each having at its smaller `end, an inlet pipe 8 and at its larger end, anoutlet pipe 9.
By reference to Fig. 2, it will be observed that the transverse passages 7 begin at one endofa blade or vane 5 and extend all the way around to the opposite end of the next blade or vane which is due to the fact that the partitions are at an angle to the axis of the rotary element, so that the steam is compelled to tane a spiral path, engaging lirst one blade or vane, then carried around through the casing in a general forward direction, as well as a transverse direction, and again engaging a blade or vane, and so ou around and around until the end of the p 1ssage is reached.
In Fig. l, the steam takes three complete curves before exhaust, and I have provided four of these passages or sections, all of uhich increase in width from the inlet to the outlet,so that as the steam expands, such expansion is utilized in the driving of the rotary element. In Fig. 5, I have illustrated a continuous passage all around the rotary element, said passage gradually increasing in Width from one end to the other, and I would have it understood that I may ar range these passages in any length and in any number which will vary in accordance with the size of the turbine and the speed and power desired. In any event, however, the operation will be the same, namely, the
steam will be compelled to take a spiral` course impacting in its passage a number of times with the inclined blades of the rotary element, so that the same fluid is utilized again and again to impact against the blades and drive the rotary element.
As shown in Fig. G, I may provide a plu rality of turbines upon a single shaft Ll, and operate all of them from a single supply pipe 10 with branch pipes or nozzles l1, extending to the several turbines.
Various slight changes might be made in the general form and arrangement of parts described without departing from my invention, and hence I do not limit myself to the precise details set forth, but consider myself at liberty to make suoli changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of the ap )ended claims.
Having thus descri ed my invention, what loo I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. A turbine comprising a rotary element provided with a plurality of radial angularly disposed vanes on the periphery thereof, and a casing inclosing said rotary elenient and provided with an innerl Wall peripherally encircling said rotary element and engaging the outer' ends of said vanes, said casing adjacent said vanes being laterally enlarged and a series of partitions in said enlarged portion angularly and oppositely disposed to the angular dispositlon of said Yanes, substantially as described.
