WULF SILVERIVIAN,
0F INIEVV YORK, N. Y., ASE'IIGINOIR OF FIFTEEN ONE-HUNDREDTHS TO SAMUEL N. 'WEINER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
COMBINED LETTER-HGLDEE AND ENVELOP-UPENER.
Application filed January 20, 1512;
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WULF SILVERMAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, county and State of New York, have invented a new and useful form of Combined Letter-Holder and Envelop-Opener, of which the following is a specification.
Various devices have heretofore been provided having for their object the removal of a letter from anenvelop without previously cutting the latter, the envelop being opened by the same operation which removes the letter. All of such devices however have been open to objection in that there exists danger of injury to the letter during removal, and that the letter must be on heavy paper, the use of the ordinary single sheet letter, bill, statement, slip, etc., being pro- .hibited.
form of my holder and opener as opened to receive a letter, bill, etc. F ig. 2 represents a view of the holder and opener shown in Fig. 1 inserted in an envelop prepared to receive the same. Fig. 3 represents another form of my holder and opener. Fig. 4 represents an envelop having the holder and opener of Fig. 3 inserted therein, the envelop being shown in dotted lines. Fig. 5 represents a form of my holder and opener with its cutting edge on one of its shorter ends. Fig. (3 represents an envelop having the holder and opener of Fig. 5 inserted therein.
Like characters of reference designate cor responding parts in all of the figures.
Turning to a detail description of my invention and considering Figs. 1 and 2, my holder and opener consists of a folder, open at three sides, formed preferably of card board 10 folded or of two pieces, connected by a flexible hinge portion 11. In the form on a curve to form cutting edges. As shown Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 24, 1914.
Serial No. 672,322.
rounded edges of the folder are positioned, I
are provided with perforations through both the body and the flap of the envelop which form semi -circular frangible pieces 14. These pieces may be grasped between the fingers and readily detached from the en velop. At the opposite edge of the envelop and within the same, obstructions, 15, 15, are provided which prevent the incloscd folder from slipping entirely down to that edge. These obstructions 15 may be formed as desired as for example by pasting together the sides of the envelops at the edge. As will readily be seen by considering Fig. 2, the envelop at one edge may be grasped without holding the inclosed folder between the sides thereof, and at the opposite edge the perforated portion of the envelop and the inclosed folder may be grasped.
To open the envelop it is grasped at its lower edge and at the portions l i. Then a pull in opposite direction will first break off the parts 1l at the perforated line about them and then the cutting edges 12 of the letter holder will engage the ends of the envelop opening thus formed and the adjacent edge of the envelop which is quickly and easily slit as the folder and its contents are removed. As shown the faces of the folder may be used to display advertising matter as desired.
In Figs. 3 and 4t is shown a holder and opener wherein a portion 16 is provided projecting below the line of flexible connection of the side portions 10. This projecting portion 16 is formed with an opening intermediate its length, whereby it is made possible to grasp one edge of the envelop without grasping the inclosed folder so that obstructions 15 within the envelop as shown in Fig. 2 are unnecessary.
In F igss5 and (i the form of holder and opener is changed in that the curved cutting edges are provided at one end thereof and the envelop is adapted to be slit open at one end.
What I claim is:
The combination of a folder comprising two portions of cardboard flexibly connected together along a straight line and adapted to hold a letter between said hinged portions, both of said portions of the folder being constructed to form cutting edges out of parallel with said'fiexible connection and symmetrically disposed in respect of the center thereof, an envelop entirely covering said folder provided With perforations through its body and its flap forming corresponding frangible pieces near the center of the flap and opposite the center between the cutting edges of the folder, and a pair of. obstructions Within the envelop near the edge thereof opposite its flap so arranged as to maintain the folder in position Within the envelop with its flexibly connected edge away from the corresponding edge of the 15 envelop and With a portion of its cutting edges between the frangible pieces of the en- Velop.
In Witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand this 19th day of January, 1912.
W'ULF SILVERMAN. Witnesses F. GRAVES, G. QUIMBY.
