JOHN FABIAN, OF HIGHLAND PARK, ILLINOIS.
ADJUSTABLE GUN-STOCK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 24, 1914.
Application filed December 17, 1913. Serial No. 807,199.
To all 'wfwm it may concern Be it known that 1, JOHN FABIAN, of Highland Park, county of Lake, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Gun- Stocks, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to a gunstock, having an adjustable end piece, head or shoulder plate.
This invention has certain novel features which will be more fully described in the specification, and which are shown in the accompanying drawings.
One purpose of the invention is to provide a gun-stock, with an adjustable shoulder plate by which the stock is lengthened or shortened to suit the holding position of the gun for various firing ranges. For instance, a short stock is provided for objects which are to be shot at a short range, and the stock is lengthened for longer ranges. This obviates the firer holding the gun away from his shoulder for long firing distances.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a gun, provided with a gun stock, embodying certain features of the present invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the gun stock enlarged. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. at is a sectional elevation, taken on the line :c-w of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a sectional detail, taken on the line yy of Fig. 4. Fig. 6 is a transverse section taken on the line 'w'w of Fig. 3.
Referring to the drawings 1 refers to a gun, having a barrel 2, breech 3, and a stock 4:. The end 5 of the stock 4: is provided with a shoulder plate 6. This consists of a suitable metal plate which is adapted to rest against the shoulder of the gun-holder. The plate 6 is provided with 2 inwardly extending arms 77. These arms have beveled sides 8, which engage recesses or slots 9, in the gun-stock 4. The faces of the arms 7, may he graduated as shown at 10, so that when the end piece 6 is extended outwardly its position may be suitably set by these graduations. To set this end piece at any desired point, I employ the following means. 11 is a bar or arm, having notches 12, and the gun-stock is provided with a channel 13, in which this arm runs. l.iis a tilting lever, being pivoted to the gun-stock 15, having a small knob or button 16. One end of this lever is provided with a tooth 17 this tooth normally engages one of the notches 12. 18 is a spring for keeping the lever 14 in the position so that the tooth 17 will engage one of the notches 12. When it is desired to extend or move the end piece 6, the button 16 is pressed, this releases the tooth l7, and the end piece may then be pulled out or placed in position as desired. The user at the same time watches the slide 7, so as to lengthen the gun-stock or shorten it to suit the range at which the gun is to be fixed.
It will thus be seen that my invention provides a very useful adjunct for-guns.
What I-claim is: r v 1. A gun comprising in combination, a barrel, sights, a stock, a pair of oppositely disposed dove-tailed slots extending longitudinally of the stock to the rear endthereof, a shoulder plate, a pair of oppositely disposed bars extending forwardly from substantially the centralv portion of the shoulder plate to have sliding engagement with said dove-tailed slots, said bars being formed to fit said slots and to have their outer faces fiushwith the sides of the stock, a channel in the upper edge of the stock, a bar fixed .to the shoulder plate extending into said channel, a plurality of notches in said lastmentioned bar, and a catch carried by the stock arranged to engage in one of said notches to retain the shoulder plate rigid with respect to the stock.
2. A gun comprising in combination a barrel, a-stock, a pair of oppositely disposed slots in said stock, a shoulder plate, a pair of oppositely disposed bars fixed to said shoulder plate below the top thereof, said bars having sliding engagement in said slots, and having their outer faces substantially flush with the sides of the stock, a channel in the upper edge of the stock, a bar fixed to the shoulder plate at the top thereof extending into said channel, and devices carried by the stock arranged to engage said last-mentioned bar to retain the shoulderplate at any desired position.
3. A gun comprising a barrel, a stock, a shoulder plate, three bars extending forwardly from the shoulder plate and having sliding engagement with the stock, one of said bars being fixed to said shoulder plate at or near the top thereof, and devices carried by the stock for retaining said bars and shoulder plate at any desired positions relative to the stock.
4:. A gun comprising a barrel, a stock, a shoulder plate, three bars extending forwardly from the shoulder plate and having sliding engagement with the stock, one of said bars being fixed to said shoulder plate at or near the top thereof, and means carried by the stock for engaging the last-mentioned bar to retain the shoulder plate at any of a plurality of positions relative to the stock.
5. A gun comprising in combination a barrel, a stock, an adjustable shoulder plate provided with por ions having sliding engagement with the stock, a channel in the upper portion of the stock, a notched bar fixed to said shoulder plate and projecting into said channel, a pivotedlever arranged to normally close said channel, said lever comprising a portion arranged to engage any one of the notches in said bar, and a spring acting against said lever tending to hold the lever in position to engage the notched bar and close said channel.
6. A gun comprising in combination a barrel, a stock, an adjustable shoulder plate carried by the stock, a channel formed in the stock, a bar projecting from the shoulder plate into said channel, a'pivoted lever arranged to normally close said channel, said lever comprising a portion adapted to engage said bar to retain it in any one of a plurality of positions, and spring means normally tending to force the lever into engagement with said bar.
7. A gun comprising in combination, a
barrel, a stock, an adjustable shoulder plate, a channel in said stock, a bar fixed to the plate projecting into said channel, and a detent device adapted to retain said bar and shoulder plate at any one oi a plurality of positions, said detent device comprising a plate normally closing said channel.
8. A gun comprising in combination a barrel, sights, a stock, a shoulder plate adjustable toward and away from the stock, said shoulder plate provided with a pair of oppositely disposed bars extending forwardly from substantially the middle of said shoulder plate and having sliding engagement with the stock, a channel formed in the upper portion of the stock, a notched bar projecting from the topof said plate into said channel, a pivoted lever normally adapted to close said channel, said lever comprising a portion arranged to engage in any one of the notches in the bar projecting into the channel, spring means normally tending to hold the lever in position to close the channel and engage the notched bar, and indicia carried by the gun whereby the operator may readily adjust the shoulder plate with respect to the sights to adapt the gun to his requirements for any range.
i In testimony whereof, I have hereunto subscribed my signature, this 15th day of December, A. D. 1913.
