Description

troc afar+ REUBEN w. RANDALL, or BIDDEFORD, MAINE.
Letters Patent No. 111,777, datedrebmry 14, 1871.
IM PROVEM'ENTy lN'CLOTH ES AND HATHOOKS.
The Schedule referred to inthese Letters Patent and making pari: ef the same.
To all whom it may conce/rn Be it known that I, REUBEN W. RANDALL, of Biddeford, in the county of York and State of `Maine, have invented a new and useful-0lothes and Hat- Hook; and I hereby declare the following to be afull;
`clear, and exact description thereof, reference being ,had to the accompanying drawing forming part of thisv specification, in which- Figure 1 is a side view of my invention.
Figure 2, au edge view of the same.
Same letters show like parts.
The general purpose of my inventionis to produce a hook, either portable or fixed, to which may be sus-A pended a hat, a coat, and Iother articles of clothing, as hereinafter more particularly described.
The construction of the device is as follows:
First, the hook a, whose use is to connect the device to any place or thing, like a projection, or nail, or molding on a wall of au apartment,
Second, the hook b, spring clamp c, springs d e, which are used iu combination to hold suspended the desired articles.
Third, the joint or connection f, to unite the two hooks, and also to allow them to turn or swivel on the said connection or pin, so that the hook a may be with greater convenience attached to or connected with any kind of a projection, as hereinafter more particularly illustrated.
From b any desired article of clothing can be suspended as ordinarily done.
c is more particularly designed to hold suspended a vhat, by clamping the rim of the same between c and 7l.
In traveling iu`cars and other conveyance inconvenience is felt in keeping silk hats from becoming rough-A ened by contact and rubbing. Racks are provided in cars, but these are only a partial protection.
When the hat is attached to some projection the rim of the hat is inserted between c and h, and then the whole lower part can be turned on the pin f in such way as to keep the hat from contact with anything, aud a garment attached to b will furthei` protect it.
The pivot or swivel f can be made in any convenient way.
c is connected to 71, by the pin t, and kept pressed down on the same at the lower end by the springs ed.
Instead of the hook a, ascrew or a point may be employed .to attach the device permanently. It is evident that the hook can be made portable, to be attached and used upon occasion.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination and arrangement of the hooks a and b, pivot spring clamp c, and spring e, as herein described and for the purposes set forth.
