My invention relates to devices for u'psetting or llengthening an liron bar,- and the object of, myin-'vention is to 'provide-a meansy for applying for'ceto'the end 'of a side rod,

I accomplish these objects by means of the mechanism illustrated in the'accompanying drawing, in which:

It is often necessary to shorten or upset a binder or side rod, or other piece of heavy iron, especially in a railway car repair shop, and it is necessary to keep the rod, binder or other bar straight without being curved or bent at the end, which is liable to occur after the bar has been heated and it is pounded or submitted to blows for the purpose of reducing its length. I have arranged a device by means of which the iron bar is securely gripped and positively held against a steady force exerted preferably'by means of a hydraulic ack, screw or similar arrangement applied at one end of the bar. The projections, n, at the bottom of block, K, sliding in the grooves, b, keep the block in the frame as against any tendency to rise out of the frame during the application of pressure to the work. As thus arranged, when an iron bar W suitably heated is placed in the groove, B, with its end against the block, K, and the bolt, N, placed through one of the openings, M, and the ram, D, against the end of the bar, when force is applied to the toggle, F, the bar W may be upset without bending, curving or interfering with the operating shape of the end of the bar.
