Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FRANK lV. Snuons, a citizen of the United States, residing at Santa Maria, in the county of Santa Barbara and State of California, have invented new and useful lmprovements in Nail-Strippers, of which the following is a specification.

My present invention is designed as an improvement in nail receptacles or strippers, and has primarily for its object the provision of such a device capable of being attached or suspended from a carpenters belt in place of the ordinary nail pouch now commonly used, and particularly adapted for use as a receptacle for holding a supply of shingling or lathing nails.

A further object of my invention resides in the provision of a nail stripper, so constructed as to present the nails, point first to the workman, who can easily extract or withdraw the nails from the device without necessitating the wear upon his fingers as heretofore, where the pouchis used.

A still further object of my invention contemplates the provision of automatic means whereby the nails contained within the stripper, are arranged or placed in a convenient manner ready for withdrawal or extraction one at a time, as occasion demands.

\Vith the above and other objects in view, my invention relates to such details of construction and in the arrangement and combination of the several parts as will be hereinafter fullv described and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.

In describing my invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of a stripper constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. is a side elevation, the back being partially opened. Fig. 3 is a section on line 33 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4i is a top plan view, and Fig. 5 is a fragmentary perspective view.

Referring now more particularly to the drawing wherein is illustrated the preferred form of my invention the numeral 1 designates aplurality of parallel vertically extending members, substantially V-shaped in cross section, which members comprise the front of the stripper. The. V-shaped members are uniformly spaced apart to provide a slot 2 extending vertically throughout the entire length of the stripper.

A head 3 is secured in any suitable manner upon the sides i of the stripper front, which head adapted to entirely cover the said retaining member except as at 5, thus leaving openings for the extraction or withdrawal of the nails contained within the stripper, as will hereinafter fully ap pear.

A base strip 6 is secured to the said re taining members and extends beyond the front edge thereof for the purpose of retaining or creating a rest for supporting the nails 4 when filling the stripper. A back 7 is pivotally mounted as at 8 between the sides l of the stripper front, the said back when in closed position adapted to fit between the said sides as is clearly illustrated in Fig. 3 of the drawings. The interior face ofthc said back is provided with a plurality of vertically extending uniformly spaced apart projections or guide members 9, each member extending into the diverged portion of the V-shaped retaining members or in alinement with the vertically extending slots 2 provided within the said retaining members. By this construction (when folded) it will be seen that the nails are forced through the slots '2 until the heads of the said nails engage the inner angular face of the retaining members, the said guide members engaging the heads of the nails and holding the same in proper place within the slots.

A book 10 is secured in any suitable manner upon the rear face of the back 7 for the purpose of fastening the stripper upon the belt of the workman, thus suspending the device in a manner convenient for operation without utilizing or necessitating the use of his hands for such support.

lVhen in p 'actical application the stripper is first opened and a predetermined quantity of nails placed upon the retaining members or front 1 of the stripper, the angular faces of the said retaining members guiding the nails until the shanks thereof pass through the slots 2, where they are held by reason of the engagement between the nail heads and the converged end of the said member. The back 7 is then closed, the guide members 9 fitting between the angular face of the said retaining members two stripper sections, otherwise the inner extremities of the retaining members would engage the said back and prevent the clesired pivotal movement.

It will be seen from the above, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings that the guide members 9 serve a double purpose, not only retaining the nails in proper place within the retaining members, but also forcing them in such proper position during the closing of the two sections; that the angular faces of the retaining members cause the shanks of the nails to pass through the slots 2, such movement be ing limited by the engagement between the nail. head and the said angular faces; and an extraction of the nails, when the device is closed, can only be accomplished by sliding the same vertically within the stripper and through the opening 5 provided for that purpose upon the top thereof.

It is thought from the foregoing that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily comprehended.

While means for fastening the two sec tions together when closed has not been shown, any suitable catch mechanism may be employed for that purpose.

I desire it to be understood that I may make slight changes in the construction and in the arrangement and combination of the several parts, provided such changes fall within the scope of the subioined claims.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to se cure by Letters Patent, is

1. A nail stripper including a nail retain ing plate consisting of a plurality of sub stantially V-shaped members arranged in parallel spaced relation, the spaces between the several plates forming guide slots for the nails, means maintaining the nails within the slots, and a top strip so arranged relatively to the nail retaining plate as to form openings at the top thereof through which the heads of the nails are passed when stripped or withdrawn.

A nail stripper including a plurality of spaced apart nail retaining members, means for supporting the nails within the spaces between the said members, sides formed integrally with certain of said retaining members, a. back pivotally secured to and between the said sides, and means including a plurality of vertically extending guide members arranged to lit, one between each pair of said retaining members for positioning the nails within the space therebetween, as and for thepurpose set forth.

3. A nail stripper including aplurality of substantially V-shaped. uniformly spaced nail retaining members, a base secured to the said retaining members for supporting the nails in proper place, sides formed integrally with certain of said retaining members, a back pivotally secured to and between the said sides, a plurality of uniformally spaced apart vertically extending guide members provided upon the inner face of said back and arranged to fit between the said retaining members for positioning the nails within the spaces between the said retaining members and means carried by said back for suspending the device, as and for the purpose set forth.
