WRENCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Novi 17, 1914.
Application filed January 16, 1914. Serial No. 812,477.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, IRWIN S. OVERHOLSER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Cakes, in the county of Dickey and State of North Dakota, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Wrenches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to wrenches, and more particularly that type known as pipe wrenches, and one of the principal objects of the invention is to provide a pipe wrench, which may be securely locked on pipes of various sizes by one movement and without the necessity of preadjustment.
A'further object of theinvention is to provide an improved wrench of the type 7 specified, which will be extremely simple,
durable, 8111016111; in operation, and inexpensive tomanufacture.
With these and other objects in view which will become apparent as the, description proceeds, the invention resides in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts thereof, hereinafter more fully described and claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which like characters of reference indicate like parts throughout the figures, ofwhich,
Figure 1 represents a side elevational view of the wrench, constructed according to my invention, Fig. 2 represents a top plan view of the same, and Fig. 3 represents a perspective view of one of the wrench jaws.
In carrying out the preferred embodiment of the invention, I provide a handle 5 which may be of any desired and suitable shape, and which may be formed of a single bar of metal. The handle at one end thereof, is bifurcated to form the ears 6, and a stud 7 connects the ears and extends through an elongated slot 8 in the rear reduced end 9, of one of the jaws 10, of the wrench, which jaw is preferably formed of a single bar of metal rounded on its outer edge as at 11, and on its inner edge being cut to form a pair of shoulders 12 and 13, extending substantially at right angles to each other, shoulder 12 being plain, and shoulder 13 being provided with teeth for gripping a pipe or the like.
A. second jaw is provided, which comprises a pair of bars 1 1 connected at their forward ends, as at 15, and positioned so as to embrace the jaw 10 at the lower end of the plain shoulder 12 thereof, and to embrace at their rear ends the handle 5 at a bars 14 are pivotally connected by means of studs or pins 16 with the jaw 10 and handle 5 at the points above mentioned, namely, at the end of the plain shoulder 12 of jaw 10 opposite from shoulder 13 thereof and between shoulder 13 and the lower end of the jaw, and at a point on handle 5 in spaced relation to the connection 7 between said handle and jaw 10. Pivot points 16 of the bars 14 are substantially equidistant from pivot point 7 between handle 5 and jaw 10. The forward ends of the bars let are bent slightly downwardly as at 17, and are provided with teeth oppositely disposed with respect to the teeth on shoulder 13 and adapted to co-act therewith in engaging a pipe or similar object.
By means of the construction described,
it is evident that by moving the handle 5 in the direction indicated bythe arrow in Fig. 1, a tendency will be exerted on the jaw members by which to bring the rear portions thereof, or the portions connected to handle 5, together, and hence to bring the oppositely toothed portions of thejaw members together, thus positively gripping the pipe or similar object with which the wrench is being used at the time. be understood that a movement of handle 5 in a reverse direction, will separate the jaws, thereby loosening the grip of the wrench from the pipe. Since movement of the handle 5 in opposite directions will close or open the jaws, as the case may be, it is evident that the wrench may be used with various sized pipes, without the necessity of any preadjustment whatever.
Although I have described the prefepred embodiment of the invention, I may desire to make such changes in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts thereof, as do not depart from the spirit of the invention and the scope of the appended claim.
I claim:
A wrench comprising a movable jaw formed of a single bar of metal provided with a shoulder and a toothed portion at one end and at the other end being reduced and provided in the reduced portion with an elongated slot extending longitudinally of the bar, a stationary jaw to which said movable jaw is pivoted, a handle pivoted to It will 1 10 cent the movable aW being toothed on their upper edges, said bars at their extreme forward ends being connected together, said bars being spaced apart equally throughout their length, said movable aw and handle being of a uniform thickness.
