Description

EBLNK WILLIS MAYES, oF HOPKINSVILLE, KENTUCKY.
LINEMANS CHAIR.
To all whom it may Concern Y Be it known that T, FRANK W. Mayas, a citizen' of. the UnitedStates, residing at Hopkinsville, county of Christian, and of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Linemens Chairs,v
of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to linenians chairs, that is, tov a traveling seat adapted to he supported upon the messenger wire to accommodatethe lineman when attaching` a cable to said wire.
The object of' my invention is to provide a device f the class meutioned'whieh may be readilyY placed upon the messenger wire and which cannot accidentally he displaced therefrom while in use through the neglect of the linenian to take the proper precautions.
A-furtherobject of my invention is Lo provide. a device as mentioned which ma; be easily propelled along the messenger wir@ hy the lineman and equipped with means for locking the same at aufY desired position.
A further object of my invention is to provide a device with an imnfoved cable raising and supporling devi-ee' 'and which shall not interfere with placingr the device on the wire.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
lV ith these objects in view in v invention consists generally in a pair of hangers provided at their upper ends with groei-ed wheels adapted to travel upon the messenger' wire and pair of VhorizontalliY disposed longitudinal meu'ibers forming' the seat and spaced apart to permit the 'device to be placed asti-ide the wire.
invent-ion further consists in :i device as stated further characterized b v means for locking one of the wheels against rotation to secure the chair in any desired position upon the wire. v My invention further consists in a chair as stated further characterized by being equipped with a cable wheel or pullevY rotal.
tably mounted upon a shaft arranged upon one of said hangers and of such construction that the vsame may be swung out of position when placing the chair upon the wire.
My invention further consists in various details of construction and arrangements of parts allies will he fully described herein- Specification of Letters Patent.
.pplication tiled `lilay 5, 1913.
J:ter and particularly pointed out in thev Patented 'N ov. 17, 12H4. serial misuse. l
My invention will he more readily understood b v reference to the accompany-'irrer drawings forming e part of this specification and in whicl Figure l is a perspective view of a. linemans chair enihodying my invention in its preferred form, afb il is anend elevation of the same, and Fig. is a detail sectional view through the upper portion of one of the hangers and illustrating the means for locking one of the wheels against rota tion.
The chair comprises a pair of. similar hangers 1 and 2 respectively and a seat 3. T he hangers are each formed of a. single niet-al strap lient 'upon itself to form a pair of dii-'erging depending arms il-A haviz their lower ends turned horizontall)r inwardl5 as at 5 to support the seat The seat f-is formed of two longitudinally disposed members i3 preferably of wood, and connectingr the ends 5 of the respecti ve hangers l. ends of the hangers. The upper portion of the arms 4 lie parallel toveach other for a short distance as at 8 and are perforated to form bearings for the axle of -the'wheels 9 which rest upon the messenger wire The arms are then bowed outwardly as :it 10 to form an enlarged space for the cable B to pass through without touching the arms and then diverging through the remainder of their lengths. The longitudinal members (l oi the seat 3 aretspaced apart as illustra ted in order that the device may be readil)7 placed asti-ide the wire A and to position.
One of the wheels 9 is provided with a trzansverse aperture or perforation 1 1 which is adapted to register with perforations 1Q in the p1 rtiens of the respective hanger to receive. a pin 13 for locking the wheel against rotation. The pin is provided with a chain or {lexihle member 14 securing the same to the hanger so that the same cannot he accidentally dl'p )ed Y v 15 indicates a shal 16 pivotally connected to one arm 4 of the hanger 1. The other end of the Shaft-is adapted to rest in a. hook 17 formed upon the other arm of the hanger and rotatably mounted upon said shaft is a cable wheel 18. courus 19 on the shaft 15 holding the wheel in position thereon WhenA it is desired t0 place the device on the messenger A brace har 7 connects the upper facilitate initiallyY raising the cable into.
t provided 4with an eyev to initially place the cable on the wheel 18, Ythc free end of the shaft 15 is lifted out of the hook 17 and the shaft swung to one side. After the device is in position on the wire and cable lifted bet*` 'een the seat members t' the shaft 15 and wheel 18 are swung into position beneath the cable and the end ball bearings 20 to facilitate moving the de` vice along the messenger wire,
Having described my invention, 'I claim:
l. A linemuns chair comprising a pair of substntially inverted Ushaped hangers, wire engaging wheels mounted'in the upper ends of said hangers and a pair of spaced longitudinal. seatnieinbers connecting the lower ends of said hangers, said hangers terminating at the inner edges of said seet members, substantially es described.
2. A linemans chair comprising a pair of substantially Ainverted U-shaped hangers, wheels mounted inthe upper end of said hangers,'a seat connecting the lower. ends of said hangers, said Wheels and-the adjacent portions of said arms being provided with apertures Aadapted4 to 'register and a pin adapted to be inserted in said apertures for nanie to this specificationA in the varms, wheels mounted between the parallel portions of said arms, said wheelsand the adjacent portions of said arms being provided with apertures adapted to register and a pin adapted to be inserted in said apertures, substantially as described.
4. A lineinnns chair comprising a pair of substantially inverted U-shaped hangers',
each formed of a single strip of material,
wheels mounted in the upper portions of said hangers, a pair of spaced longitudinal sent members connecting the lower ends of said hangers, said. hangers terlninatiirm at the' inner edges .of said scat members, a. shaft pivotally connected at one end to one arm of one of said hangers, a hook adapted to receive the other end of said shaft and a. cable wheel mounted on said sha-ft, substantially as described. i
n testimony whereof I have signed iny presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
