Application led Apri123, 1912. Serial No. 692,846.
To all whom 'it ma, concern Be it known t at I, MORGAN HOGAN, a citizen of the United States, residing in Utica, New York, have invented certain Imrovements in Union Suits of which the following is a' specification.
My invention relates to that class of union suits in which the crotch opening is non above the crotch and also at the lower end of the buionbole strip in an open front garment, and a still further objeci"l being to so construct the crotch-closing fia svthat they are Well calculated to Withstan the strains o which they are subjected in the use of the eCL garment. These objects I attainin the man# nerheeinaftei set forth, reference being .had to 'the accompanying drawing, in-
Figure l is a front View of suiiicien'l: of a union snit io iiiustrate my invention; Fig. 2 is e rear View of tl'iesame; Fig. 3 isa rear 'View oi' the blank for tbe, union suit before Jbe crotch-closing laps are a plied the etc; Fig. d is a View of the blank o which ea h 01"' said @cicli-closing flaps is composed, and Fig. 5 is a View showin the position assinned by the members o said ilap When-it is applied to the union suit. I n i ln eine drawing, i nep-rescues tbe body and 2, 2", the upper portions of the legs of the union suit, the iotter, in the garment; which li have selected for illustrating my inven- "finion, being one of hat type in wliich the body is open in front, one of the edges' oi this open @ont the body portion` being provided with a row of buttons and the othenwitb a blttonbole strip 3.
The'body and legs may consist of a seamless tnbiilai web'or fiat and folded ,Weber Webs,as may be desired, buiJ in either case the' web will be severed on central longitudinal lines so as to form icone edges fland rear edges 5 ai. the inner lside of one leg, and correspondingedges el and 5B at the inner side ol the other leg, the incision correspending with the rear portion of the gari mein; being; longer or deeperl than that corying of a blankio thecliaracterslflown responding with the freni: portion, so thatt will extend up into the back; of the gerlnoii'. body some distance above-V tb'e crotch and tlius provide rear edges 5 and 5a, as'shw'n'in" Fig. 3, `whereby when the leg; portionsi'of the:
garment` are spread, as shown., 1n Fig; 3',
triangular incisions will be fomedg'thawn the rear 'being deeper than that' ajilloffm" In connection with the blank thus pipa I use two crotcbsclosing flaps, eaciifcoil Fig: lassid blank having, by preieienc straigbi up er edge 8 and straight and pa allel sldeeges 9 and l0, and having `aiis. loner end lateraliy projecting gusset l"l which 1s secured to the lower end. of lie yblank I by an angular seam 12, and presents' an inclined outer edge 13 and 'other' edges 14 f-l` and 15, the lae'eer, by prefezfenoe, being ata right; angie to one another, as shown in Fie'. 4. In `applyii'ig these flaps tothe bien o shown in Fig. 8, the upper endetthe uiiap Whiob is used in connection with the right leg 2 1s secured to the back of the body web, as at 16, (Fig. 2 'in line or theres-bouts with the top of the rear incision but` en the left' side of lie central longitudinal' line of the body, and ille edge 10 of'said iiapissecured to he edge G of said rear incision, asshown at 17 in Fig. 2. The gusset ll'bemg turned' up, as shown at Fig. 5, its edge 13 is secured to the edge 4 of the front incision above the point 18, as shown at 19, Fig. Lfand the up- ,per edge l of the gussei*I is secured to the.
front web oi elle body ai a pointat orfabove the top of the front incision, as shown at 20 (Fig. l), the edge 9 of the ap and zbeedge 11E of che upisurned gassen being iefo free. n like manner tbe top edge 8 of the iiap which is used in connection will; die left; le 2s of the garment is Securedio tbe baclo thevbody web at or about be so" of ilielear incision and on the right heno side of the longitudinal central line of the body as ai; y 16, and the edge 10.1o`f vsaid ap is secured l to tbe'edge 6 of said rear incision as a'n 17, Fig. 2, the edge 13 of the upturned Hap-be?.
ing secured to the edge 4g of the front in- 'cision above the point 18 as at 19a (Fig. l)
and tbe upper edge l5 of the gusset being secured to the front `web of the body at or above tbe top of the front incision, as ai: 20 (Fig. l). The last applied flap overlaps that first applied as shown in Figs. l andl2, so as to el'ectuellyclose the opening in the CnA body, the iaps retaining the closed position vwithout the use of buttons or other fastendesired to shape said legs at the ankle.
. Thev seams20and 20EL whereby the upper edges of the upturned gussets l1 are secured -to the front web of the garment body constitutea stay for said front web above the crotch opening and belour thev openingin the front of fthe garment body, and thus enable this portion of the body web to betv ter"r"esist the strains, which, in the use of the garment, are exerted upon it at this point.
The member l1 of each flap is made 'in the form of an attached gusset both for the purpose of saving Waste in cutting and in order that the Wales of stitches may run lengthwise in the gusset as well as in the main web of the fiap, the member 11 of the flap being thereby stronger and better able to resist the strains upon it than' it would be if the said member 1l was integral with the body member 7 of the iap, for in the llatter case the wales of stitches in the member 1l would run in a direction Ltransversely to its length.
The sewing together of the various parts can also be etl'ected more readily when the wales of two parts to be united run in theend united to the tapering lower end of the strip, said gusset also having an inclined side, the top of the Hap being secured to theback of the body web at about the top of the Arear incision, one edge of each iap being secured to the corresponding edge of said rear incision and the other edge of the fiap being free and the inclined ledge of the upturned gusset being secured to an .edge of the upper portion of the front incision, its other edge being free and constituting` a continuation of the free edge of the back portion ofthe flap and the top edge of said upturned gusset being secured to the front web of the body `above the crotch.l v
2. A' union suit having, at the front and rear, central incisions, said rear incision eX- tending some distance up the back of the garment, in combination with a pair of overlapping flaps constituting a closure for the opening inthe garment body, each fiap consisting of a strip having a tapering lower end and upturned gusset with tapering lower end` united to the tapering lower end of the strip, said gusset also having aninclined side/and consisting of a separate web having, stitch wales running longitudinallyof the' gusset and at an angle to the ,wales o the main portion of the {lap, ,theitop each vflap being secured to the bags/oi the body web at about the top of the rear incision, one edge of each flap being secured/to the corresponding edge of saidear incision, and the other edge of the flap being free, one edge of the upturned gusset of each iap being secured to the upper por 'ion of the front incision, its other edge being free and. constituting a continuation of the free edge of the back'portion of the flap, and the top edge ofsaid upturned gusset being secured to the front web of the body above the crotch. l
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of tWo subscribing Witnesses.
