Specification of Letters "Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ABRAHAM T. HARPER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Portland, in the county of Cumberland and State of Maine,'have invented certain new and useful Improvements inPaper-Outters, of which the following isa specification.
Figure l is a plan view of my device; Fig. 2 is a detail elevation of my improved transverse adjustable gage; Fig. 3 is a detail showing pivot and washer; and Fig. 4 is a detail of the blank for the spring which holds the movable blade with yielding tenting blade C. The blade C is attached to the blade B by means of a pivot bar D.
Said bar is provided with a threaded nut F on the end thereof, and interposed between nut F and blade C is a pronged spring E and a washer G, the washer G being provided with a dog G adapted ,to take into a longitudinal groove D in the pivot bar and being located between the spring and The pivot is rigidly inserted in the stationary blade and the construction of the washer is such that it can not be turned on the pivot bar. The movable blade and the spring turn on the pivot bar. Thus constructed, there is no tendency of the nut to loosen by repeated action of the movable blade. The movable blade is provided on its pivot end with a slight olfset H beyond the pivot point so that, when the spring is set, it holds the free end of the blade with a yielding tension. against the stationary blade, so that the movable blade always moves against the stationary blade with a shearing cut, thus preventing any possibility of the two cutting edges failing to coincide at all cutting points. Mounted'in the base is an adjustable gage I set on a spindle J passing through the base, said spindle being provided with a stop J on the inside of the gage and with a removable nut, K on the outside thereof, so that the gage I may be detached from its supporting spindle for convenience in packaging. The gage is parallel with the cutting blades and is adjustable in the base, and maybe held in any position by means of a set screw L set in the base and adapted to be turned'into engagement with the spindle. In a transverse recess M located in thebase near the pivot point is an adjustable gage N provided with angle sockets O, and on its inner end with a projection P substantially equal to the width of the stationary cutter. The upper edge of the gage N isnormally above the plane of the top of the table. The gage is held in place by means of pins Q, which pass through angle sockets in the gage. In the normal position of the gage the pins are inthehorizontal portions 0 of the angle sockets. hen it is desired to cut a piece of paper longerthan the table, the gage M may be moved away from the cutting blades, and then falls in the recess until the pins are in the top of the vertical portions 0 of the angle sockets, thus leaving the paper free to slide beyond-the end of the table and the cut is then completed by another movement of the cutting blades.
Having thus described my invention and its use, I claim: v 1. In a paper cutter, a table, a cutting blade rigidly secured to said table, a pivot bar rigidlysecured to said cutting blade, a movable cutting blade pivotally mounted upon said pivot bar, awasher rigidly mounted upon said pivot bar, and a pronged spring pivotally mounted upon said pivot bar between said movable blade and said Washer.
2. In a paper cutter, a table, a stationary blade secured thereto, a movable cutting blade pivotally attached to said stationary blade, a transverse groove in said table near the pivot end of the blades and a gage adjustable vertically .and transversely of the table.
3. In a paper cutter, a table, a stationary cutting blade secured thereto, a movable cutting blade pivotally attached to said stationary blade, a gage lying parallel with and outside of the cutting blades and adjustable relative thereto, and an adjusting gage at right angles to said cutting blades and adjustable vertically and transversely relative thereto.
4.
