Description

p UNITED STATES PATENT (DEEICE.
HENRY ROTH, OF VIRGINIA CITY, NEVADA.
IMPROVEMENT IN PEN-HOLDERS.
Specilieation forming part ofLetters Patent N0. 111,683, dated February 7, 1871.
I make and use my said invention or improvements without further invention or experiment.
My improvement relates to reversible penholders; and it consists in so constructing the metallic pen-clasp that it can be hinged to the end of the slotted handle or stock of the pen, A metallic ferrule is arranged to slide up and down along the handle, and serves to stay the pen and its clasp firmly in place when open and ready for use, and also to slip over and protect the point of the pen when it is closed down upon the handle.
In order to more fully explain my invention, reference is had to the accompanying drawings, formin g a part of this specification, in Which- Figure l shows the pen folded down upon the handle. Fig. 2 shows the pen in position for use. Fig. 3 shows a portion of the device not fully shown in Fig. 1.
A represents the handle or stock of any penholder. One end of this handle is provided with a narrow slot, b, which extends a short distance along the handle longitudinally with it. A metal plate, c, is placed in this slot,
and a rivet passes through the jaw on each side of the slot and through the plate c in a manner similar to that in which blades are secured in knife-handles. Then the plate c stands in a line with the handle, a portion of it will extend beyond the end of the handle, as shown. To this extended end is soldered, or otherwise fixed, the pen-clasp cl. The opposite corner of the plate c is rounded off so as to not interfere in closing or shutting up the pen and to give it a neat appearance. When a pen is thrust into the socket in this clasp, its lower end Will extend down upon the Wood of the handle. A movable ferrule, E, is then slipped up over this end un til it strikes the lower end of the peu clasp, thus furnishing a neat and excellent pen-holder.
When it is desired to fold or shut up the pen so that it can be carried in the pocket Without injury, the ferrule E is slipped down upon the handle and the plate c turned forward until the pen lies upon the Wood of the handle, after which the ferrule can be slipped up over the point ot' the pen so as to protect it.
ByA this manner of constructing pen-holders I provide a cheap and substantial pen, Which can be carried about the person without injury, and can be readily opened and closel When desired.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a reversible pen holder or stock, A, having a slot, b, the combination and arrangement of the pivoted plate c, clasp d, and movable ferrule E, substantially asV and for the purpose described.
