ARVID F. CARLIN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y;
ACTUATING MECHANISM FOR MECHANICAL FANSi Specification oi Letters Eatent.
Patented Nov. 10, 1914.
Application filed December 26, 1912. Serial No. 738,539.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that f, ABVID F. CARLIN, a citizen of the United States, and residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Actuating llfechanism for Mechanical Fans, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in tle art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to mechanical fans, and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class which may be used in connection with and operated by a rocking chair, or which may be used in connection with a chair of any kind and be operated by the feet, and with these and other objects in view the invention consists in a device of the class specified, constructed and operating as hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my invention are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is a sectional side elevation of my improved mechanical fan device ;li ig. 2 a transverse section on the line 2-2 of Fig. lf-Fig. 3 a similar section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1, and ;Fig. 4: a view similar to Fig. l on anenlarged scale, and showing only parts of the construction.
In the practice of my invention, as shown in the drawing, 1 provide a suitable box or casing a the back of which is provided with a hanger or suspending member a having a central aperture a whereby the device may be suspended from any suitable support, and in the bottom of the casing a is a longitudinal slot or opening a The casing a is also provided adjacent to the back thereof with two transverse partition plates a and a forming a transverse spring chamher a and a transverse back chamber a Mounted centrally and longitudinally in the main part of the casing a is a shaft l) which. projects through the front wall a of said casing and through the partition plate a into the chamber a and a spring 5 is secured in the bottom of said chamber and bears on the end of said shaft, as shown at N, and said shaft is longitudinally movable to a slight extent. Mounted on the shaft Z) within the main compartment a of the casing a and secured to said shaft is a drum 0. The drum 0 may be secured to the shaft 1) by solder, as shown at c, or in any other way, and secured at one end portion of said drum and wound thereon is a cord (II which is passed out through the slot or opening a". Mounted on the front end portion of the shaft Z) adjacent to the front wall a of the casing a is a gear wheel 6 the inner side of which is provided with a ratchet f having teeth on its inner face and which is secured thereto, in the form of construction shown, but which may be formed integrally therewith, if desired, and secured to the shaft 1) between the ratchet and the corresponding end of the drum ois a radial pawl. 9 having a nose piece which operates in connection with the teeth of the ratchet lVithin the spring chamber a is placed a strong helical spring it one end of which is secured to the casing a and the other to the shaft. 5, and mounted in the bottom part of the front wall a of the casing a: is a shaft a the inner end of which is provided with a pinion which meshes with the gear a, and the outer end of which is provided with a fan j.
One of the objects of my invention is to provide a fan which may be used in connection with and operated by a rocking chair, and in this use of the device it is suspended from or connected with a support adjacent to the chair, or adjacent to which the chair may be placed, and the end (Z of the cord (Z which passes out through the slot or opening a is connected with the back of the chair, and in the operation of the chair, as a rocker, the drum 0 will be automatically rotated at intervals in opposite directions by the chair and by the spring 7i, and this operation will result in turning the gear c continuously in one direction and the fan 57 continuously in the opposite direction.
l Vhen the drum 0 is turned by the spring it, the pawl 9 moves backwardly with the teeth of the ratchet and the drum 0 and shaft 6 move slightly in the direction of the arrow 00 of Fig. 4:, but at the limit of this backward movement the spring 6 which always bears on the shaft forces the drum and sl'laft in the opposite direction and the pawl g engages the ratchet f, and the drum will be turned in the opposite direction by the chair.
My invention is not limited to the above described use thereof, and the device may be attached to any kind of a chair or to a support adjacent to a chair, or adjacent to which a chair may be placed, and may be operated by the feet, or by the hands, if desired.
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is In a mechanical fan device, a casing, a shaft mounted therein and movable longitudinally, a gear wheel loosely mounted on one end portion of said shaft and provided on its inner side with a ratchet having teeth on its inner face, a radial pawl connected with said shaft and operating in connection with said ratchet, a spring bearing on the opposite end of said shaft and adapted to hold the pawl in connection with said ratchet, a drum mounted on said shaft and secured thereto, a spring for turning said drum and shaft in one direction, and a cord wound on said drum and suspended therefrom, and by means of which said drum may be turned in the opposite direction.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my namein presence of the subscribing witnesses this 21st day of December 1912.
ARVID F. CARLIN,
