UNITED STATES ParEN'r OFFICE.
JOSEPHINE M. SPIELBAUER, or SEATTLE, WASHINGTON.
GAP-REMOVER.
Specification of Letters Patent. Pate-fited NO 10, 1914.
Original application filed March .5, 1913, Serial No. 752,185. Divided and this application filed September 15, 1913. Serial No 789,933.
sauna, a citizen of the UnitedStates, resid- :ing at Seattle, in the county of King and State of lVashmgton, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in, Cap-Removers, of which the following is a specification, reference being bad to the acconr panying drawings.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in cap removers and the ob ject of the invention to provide a device of this general character having novel and improved means whereby the same may be readily and conveniently adjusted into folded position so that the same may be conveniently carried in a pocket or the like.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device is rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, all as willbe hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of the invention will be carefully defined in the appended claim.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, 1 will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure lis a view in front elevation of a cap remover constructed in accordance with my invention, and adjusted into folded position; Fig. 2 is a view in side elevation of the device as shown in Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1, but with the lever member shown adjusted into its limit of outward move ment.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, 1 denotes a loop member, the ends 2-2 of which are flattened with their transverse diameters substantially perpendicular to the transverse diameter of the loop proper and extend outwardly from the loop in spaced parallel relation and each having their free ends disposed on a bevel, as indicated at 3,
as and for a purpose to be more particularly referred to. i
The loop member 1 is adapted to be applied. to a bottle cap preferably of the crimped type, while the under edge of such cap is adapted to be engaged by the projection 4 extending forwardly substantially at the center of one side portion of an end of the elongated member 5, the portion of such member 5 adjacent the projection 4 being snugly accommodated between the spaced ends 2 and pivotally supported therebe tween through the medium of the transversely directed pin 7 extended through the end portions 2--2 adjacent theinner ends thereof and through the elongated member 3. The portion of the elongated member positioned between the end portions 2 is of such a thickness that, when the parts are adjusted in operative position, the projection 4. will be slightly offset relatively to the loopl.
'1 heloop member 1 or more particularly the main portion thereof is formed of flattened material and adjacent the spaced ends 2, the transverse diameter of the wall. of such loop is substantially equal tothe distance from the pivotal pin 7 to the end of the elongated member 5 so that when the elongated member 5-is adjusted into a posi tion with the projection 4 extending inwardly. of the loop the inner end of such elongated member 5 -will be. substantially flush with the inner walls of the loop member 1 so that no obstructionior hindrance will be offered to the projection 4 which would otherwise'tend to interfere with the proper engagement of such projection with the U lower edge portion of the cap.
The elongated member 5 may be of any predetermined length and such member 5 is adapted to afford the requisite leverage whereby the cap may be forced from operative position, and as herein disclosed this member 5 is provided with the oppositely disposed laterally directed lugs 8-8 adapted to contact with or abut the beveled ends 3 of the spaced parallel end portions 2 when such member 5 is adjusted to extend the projection 4 within the looped member 1, and for this reason the contacting edge surfaces 9 of the lugs 8 are beveled correspondingly with the ends 3-3 whereby it will be obvious that when the parts are properly adjusted to remove the cap the be-vels 3 and 9 will cause the parts to cooperate in the same manner as if they were integrally produced.
The greater end portion of the elongated member 5:5; may be for purposes of con venience formed into any. requisite tool or implement For convenience of illustration, I herein show such portion 10 formed as a corkscrew, although it is obvious that it may be constructed to serve as a nail file, button hook or the like, andinorder to'serveas a protection for the extremities of this pertion 10 when in folded position relatively to the loop l, I provide such loop 1 diametrically opposite to the end portions 2 with the elongated extension 11 provided with the portions being beveled, an elongated meminwardly directed open ended recess 12 into which the free end portion of such part 10' is adaptechto' extendg ass-is thought to be" clearly obvious. Also for 1 the 1 purposes oi convenience, the free end portion-of the ex tensionzll may be-sl1arpened,1as indicated atj l4, to serve as a screw-driver while the inter mediate portionl ot the extension may be; provided with a substantially :rectangu'lar 2? opening 15 whereby' the device may serve as a manipulating "device, suchyfor instance; as a presto-light key:
From the foregoing descripti'onsof myimprovement-s, it is thought to be obvious that a cap remover constructed. in accordance with my linventi'oniis of an extremely simple and comparatively inexpensive nature andis particularly well: adaptedefor use by reason of the convenience and faoility with Which" it maybe'adjusted eitheriinto foldedbr ex-' tended position and by -reason of the "effectiveness -with.which the adjusted parts cooperate-in orderto create the necessary leverage anditwill also be obvious that a cap remover constructed :in l accordance with my invention is susceptible of some change and. modification without 'materiahddp arture fromx the principles and scope'thereof and forithis reason I'do-not vvish to be-understoodas limiting' myself to the precise arrangement and formation "of the several parts, hereinshown; in carrying. out" my invention in l practice. 1 1
