SECTION AL BOOKCASE.

'To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CARL J. LUNDsTRoM, a subject of the King of Sweden, residing at Little Falls, in the county of Herkimer and Stateof New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sectional Bookcases, of which the following is a specification. r i

This invention relates to sectional bookcases.

One object is to provide a sectional bookcase which may be readily folded for trans portation or storage purposes and embodying in addition to this feature and other characteristics means whereby units may be added to the cases and substantially supported in superimposed relation with the shelves so mounted that a slight saggingof the shelves may be permitted without undue strain on the sides or other parts of the case.

With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction and novel combination of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claims hereto appended; it being understood thatvarious changes inthe form, proportion, size and minor details of construction, may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.

Fig. 3 is a fragmentary view showing how the shelf may sag without effecting disconnectionof the sides. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of one of the corner irons. Referring now more particularly to the accompanying drawings, the reference character 1 indicates the sides of a section, 2 the shelves, and 3 the backs of the sections. Each side has at its lower edge a notch 4 and also has on its lower edge' from the notch 1 to its rear edge,a tongue 5, so that the lower edge of a side may have its tongue 5 fitted in the groove 6 at the top of the corresponding side and have its notch l fit over the shoulder 7 at the upper forward edge of each side whereby displacement of an upper side with a superimposed lower side cannot take place either laterally or forwardly, this tongue and groove connection being reinforced to perform these functions by means of a lug 8 adapted to fit in a groove 9 in the upper edge of each side.

The corner irons are elastic and this permits slight sagging or movement of the shelves and relieves substantially all strain on the fastenings 13. The ends of each shelf 2 are preferably rounded so as to permit the sides of the sections to be readily folded down upon the shelves.

What is claimed is 1. A bookcase section comprising side s and ashelf, each side on its inner face having a groove, corner irons secured to each shelf and also to the inner face of each side, the corner irons embodying a body portion and separated wings with one wing of each corner iron provided with a lug adapted to fit in the groove of the corresponding side.

2. A bookcase section comprising sides and a. shelf, each side on its inner face having a groove, corner irons each having separated wings, means for securing one wing of each corner iron to the corresponding side, and means for swingingly connecting the other wing of each corner iron to the shelf, the wings which are secured to the sides having lugs fitting in the grooves of the corresponding sides so that slight sagging of the shelf is permitted without undue strain on the means which secures the corner irons to the sides and permitting swingingof the sides onto the shelf.

A bookcase section comprising sides and a shelf, corner irons for the corners of the shelf, each corner iron embodying a body portion secured to the under side of the shelf and also including upstanding separated wings arranged at a right angle to each other with one of the separated Wings secured to the adjacent edge of the shelf and with the other separated wing se-V cured to the inner face of the adjacent side of the section, the separated wings permitting slight sagging of the shelf without undue strain on the means which secures the corner irons to the sides and shelf.

A bookcase comprising superimposed sections each section including a shelf, sides and a back, each side having a horizontal shoulder along its upper edge which terminates short of the front edge of the side forming a vertical shoulder, each side also having a vertical groove near its rear edge. below said horizontal shoulders, each back having a vertical groove adjacent each end, and a bracket secured to each back adjacent each end thereof and at one end projecting into the corresponding vertical groove of the back and at the opposite end projecting into the vertical groove of each side having a notch and a tongue, the notch of an upper side engaging the vertical shoulder of the side therebeneath with the tongue of the upper side engaging the corresponding horizontal shoulders of the sides therebeneath.

5. A bookcase section comprising sides each having a horizontal groove in itsinher face at its lower portion, a shelf having its ends rounded, angle irons'each including separated wings, means for securing one of the wings of each corner iron to the corresponding side, means for securingthe other wing of each corner iron to the shelf, the first named wing having a lug fitting in the horizontal groove of the corresponding side, the corner irons permitting movement of one wing of a corner iron away from the to permit sagging of the shelf, the corner irons also permitting folding of the sides onto the shelves, and a back having connection with the shelf and the sides.

6. A bookcase comprising superimposed sections each section including a shelf, sides and a back, each side having a'horizo-ntal shoulder along its upper edge which terminates short of thefront edge of the side forming a vertical shoulder, each side also having a. vertical groove near its rear edge below said horizontal shoulders, each back having a vertical groove adjacent each end, and a. bracket secured to each back adjacent each end thereof and at one end projecting into the corresponding vertical groove of the back and at the opposite end projecting into the vertical groove of the corresponding side, the lower edge of each side having a notch and a tongue, the notch of an upper side engaging the vertical shoulder of the side therebeneath with the tongue of the upper side engaging the corresponding horizontal shoulders of the sides therebeneath and closing the ends of the vertical grooves of the sides, the sides having other grooves pr jections carried by the lower edges of the sides to lit in said other grooves of the sides therebeneath.
