EDMUND A. MORSE, or 'RUTLAND, VERMONT.
Letters Patent No. 111,558, datedFebruary 7, 1871.
IMPROVEMENT IN TONGUESFOR CHILDRENS CARRIAGES.
;l.'he Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whm n it may concern Be it known that I, EDMUND A. Mouse, of Butland, in the county of Rutland and State of Vermont, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Reversible Handle or tongue for Hand-Vehicles; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to theaccompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon which forms a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 represents a side view of my carriage with the thills extending to the left.
Figure 2 is a side View of the same with thills extcndingto the right.
Figure 3 is a plan view of carriage and thills.
The nature of my invention consists in attaching movable thills to a carriage in the manner set forth.
A represents the carriage, the bottom of which may be made convex in form.
Four metal rings or tubes 7) are firmly secured to the bottom of the carriage, two of said rings being placed near the outer sides of the bottom, and nearly above the axle-trees, and in front in a corresponding position, but behind the front axle-tree.
0 represents the thills, connected at their ends by cross-bars e c.
The thills c are curved so as to be adapted to thebottom of the carriage A, and are formed with a slight swell near each end, so that when inserted in rings b, and moved into said rings, this swell or enlargement will hold the thills in place. thills 0 can be moved to the front or rear, and the carriage drawn in either direction.
The construction of my thills may vary, as seen in figs. 4 and 5.
Figure 5 represents a tongue with a cross-bar at each end, and may be confined and operated in the same manner as my thills.
- Figure 4 represents a second modification of my in-' vention, and consists-of two sets, of thills, one set operating inside of the other.
A third modification may be constructed by making one set of thills tubular, with the other set fitting into them.
Having thus described my invention,
\Vbat I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The movable thills c 0 arranged in connection with a childs carriage, as" and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I'claim the foregoing as my own I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
Witnesses: EDMUND A. MORSE.
