Letters Patent N5. 114,913, dated May 16, 1871.
\ IMPROVEMENT IN WHIFFLETREES.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters I'atent and making part of the game.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, WILLIAM S. BROWN, of Thorntown, in the county of Boone and State of Indiana, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Whifiletrees, and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing making a part of this specification and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawing is a longitudinal section view of my invention.
Figure 2 is a plan view of the same.
Figure 3 is a rear view of the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in jointed 'safety-whiflitrees; and
It consists in' the general construction and me novel arrangement of the parts of the hinge-joint, whereby strength is secured with simplicity of construction and certainty of action.
The letter A of the drawing represents the whiffletree madein two parts, a a, which abut in the center at a, and are connected in front by the hinge b.
B represents the connecting-band by which the whiffletree is secured to the cross-bar in rear of it. This band is attachedto the ends of the pivot-bolt c of the hinge. v
d d represent projections extending out from the rear face of the whiflletree, one on each side of the partition, and arranged to abut against each other.
e represents' a cap having a recess formed in it for the reception of the projections d d, which are designed to fit the recess neatly and in such a manner that there shall be no longitudinal play.
The outer ends of the projections 11 d should be nearly or quite perpendicular to the direction of the whifilet-ree, and the end walls of the recess in the cap 0 should fit closely against them, thus, when in position, clamping the sections of the whilfletree together in. rear, and rendering it rigid throughout its length.
The cap 0 is kept in position by the spring 3 attached to one end of the whifiletree.
71 represents a loop designed to guard the spring and to prevent it from being drawn too far to the rear when the cap e is pulled back to release the arms of the whifiletree.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a safety-whifiletree, the arrangement of the secnesses.
WILLIAM S. BROWN.
