, Be itknown that I, ARTHUR D. WILTSE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Patchogue, in the county of Suffolk and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Waterproof Concrete Building- Block, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention relates to fireproof building construction and has particular reference to artificial building blocks.

Among'the objects of the invention is to improve the construction of such blocks in.

such a manner as to make them both strong and light with respect to mass.

Another object of the invention is to provide a concrete building unit having associated therewith, as a permanent part thereof, a reinforcing stiffening rib of wood or material of any character adapted to be used asa means to support or connect laths or other building material.

A further object of the invention is to provide a building block having at or ad; jacent its front wall a strip of waterproofmaterial, the same constituting a fixed or positive part of the construction.

The several parts of the device may be made of any suitable materials, and the relative sizes and proportions, as well as the general design of the mechanism, may be varied to a considerable extent without departing from the spirit of the invention hereinafter more fully set forth and specifically claiimed.

Referring more particularly to the drawings, I show a building block unit 10 of substantially rectangular form in general outline and including a front wall 11, a rear wall 12 and any suitable number of connecting webs 13 forming between the front and rear walls substantially vertical air spaces 14.

of any suitable character of waterproof material substantially co-extensive with the vertical and longitudinal dimensions of the Wall 11 of which said strip or layer of material is intended to constitute a fixed part. Said material may be made of rubber, rubber composition, asphaltum, or any other suitable substance for the purpose herein set forth and put in place during the formation of the block and secured thereto by cement or any other auxiliary means. Said strip of waterproof material may occupy any desired position with respect to the front face of the wall 11, but, as shown, is located preferably along the rear face of said front wall.

The rear or inner wall 12 of the block is fitted with a reinforcing or stiffening rib 16 of Wood or other suitable material formed in the body of cement or'the composition of which the main body of the block is formed during the manufacture of the block. Said rib 16 may be of any suitable form in cross section, and of any desired length relative to the length of the block. Preferably, however, the length of the rib is the same as that of the entire block whereby the abutting ends of the ribs 16 of adjacent building units may constitute a substantially continuous strip of wood or the like to which laths, sheeting, weatherboard or other building material may be nailed or tacked in the finishing of the building.

At 17 I show a metallic reinforcing strip composed of wire or metal ribbon, or the like, extending substantially throughout the body of the block in a horizontal plane, but it is to be understood that the location as Well as the form and character of the material of this reinforcing strip may be varied to a considerable extent. As shown especially in Fig. 2, said strip at its middle portion extends along the body of the front wall 11 andis thence directed inwardly or rearwardly through the waterproof strip 15 and thence through the webs 13, rear wall 12 and strip or rib 16. The ends 17 of the metal reinforcement are preferably clenched over into the strengthening ribs 16. The strip 17, therefore, not only strengthens the entire unit construction, but serves to hold the 'several component parts of the block in proper position, especially during the formation of the block. a

Having thus described my invention, l

' claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. lhe herein described composite building block, the same comprising front and rear Walls, a pair of vertical Webs connecting said walls and maintaining them in spaced relation forming vertical air spaces, a reinforcing and'stiffening rib extending longitudinally along and embedded in the structure of the rear Wall, and a metal reinforce a main body, a layer of Waterproof material parallel to the front face of the block, a stiffening rib extending along the rear face of the block, and a binding and reinforcing strip of metal extending along the front portion of the block and thence through said rib, the outer ends of said binding and reinforcing strip being clenched into said rib.
