GEORGE I.` ROCKWOOD, OF WORCESTER, MASSACHUSETTS.
ASING FOR ALARM DEVICES.
specincanon of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 20, $19143.
Application led December 31, 1913. `Serial No. 809,745.
To all 207mm it may concern.'
a citizen of the United States, residing at WVorcester, in the 'county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have inventedy a new and useful Casing for Alarmy Devices, of which the following is a specification.`
This invention relates to that type of alarm devices used in connection with re sprinkler systems and the like and involvingO ordinarily a rotary wheel adapted yto be set into rotation by the escape of water to operate a clapper shaft and an electrical attachment for giving a separate alarm.
Heretofore, these devices have been madeA in the form of a casing surrounding the wheel and having a nozzle extending nto the casing to discharge the water against the vanes of the wheel and this has had to be connected by piping with a separate casing having a diaphragm for operating the electric alarm. The nozzle constitutes a vent for one of these casings and the other has had to be provided with another vent. The result of this has been that an appreciable amount of pressure is lost. lThis is Lvery undesirable. as these devices operate only at long intervals, and conse quently the clapper shaft is liable to rust and stick so that the full power is required.
The principal object of this invention is to provide a simpliiied, compact, and inexpensive casing for this purpose serving in itself all the purposes of both of the above mentioned casings and thus eliminating a part of the expense of setting the device up, as well as of manufacturing the parts origiynally, and also havingV only one vent so that the loss of halved. v
Reference is to be had to the accompanying` drawings in which,
Figure l is an end elevation of a casing constructed invaccordance with this invention with Jthe nozzle shown in central longitudinal section; and Fig. 2 is a central sectional view of the device.
The invention is shown in a form in which the casing comprises a single part l0, preferably a casting, having a chamber 11 therein for receiving the supply pipe 12 at the bottom and having a partition 12at at one side of this chamber so as to provide a second chamber 13 on the other side of the casing having a discharge outlet 14. This secpressure from that cause is ond chamber isopen'at 'theside The partition is provided with a hub 15 which can bebored from the open side to provide a seat -for a bearing bushing 16. The open side is intended to be closed by a separate cast member having an integral wall or plate `18 for closing that sideof the chamber 13. This wall is provided with a. bearing `19 for the shaft 20 of the Water wheel 21., the .other end of thisshaft being supported in the bushing 16. The castr member is -provided with projecting legs 17 which constitute a skeleton frame-.work for supporting ythe device .on a wall.
The clapper shaft 22`i`s in alinement with the shaft 20 and has fixedfthereon a hollow eccentric hub 23 loosely surrounding the end of the shaft 20. ln this hub on the shaft 20 is an eccentric member 24: designed to give a sharp blow to the low part of the eccentric hub when the shaft 2O starts, and thus start the clapper shaft even if it sticks.
The chamber 11 is provided with an ofi'- set 25 which surrounds a iilter26 and communicates with a nozzle 27 arranged inthe plane of the wheel 21. This discharges water directly against the vanes of the wheel 2l to turn the same for the purpose of giving an alarm. Any ordinary alarm means connected with the clapper shaft 22 can be employed. The end of the chamber 11 in the. casting 10 is also shown as open originally and closed by a movable diaphragm 31 adapted to be operated by the pressure of water to move a plunger 32 and operate an electric switch 33 to close an alarm bell circuit 34. These parts are mounted on a plate 35 located over the diaphragm. With this construction, the chambers for operating the electric alarm and for containing th'e wheel 21 are formed in a single member. There is no finishing to be done, therefore, and no fitting of parts to connect these two casings, and no complications are introduced in the placing of the plate 18, the nozzle 27, or the electrical alarm. The nozzle 27 vents the whole operating device and therefore the loss of pressure due to this is kept at a minimum.
Although I have illustrated and described only a single embodiment of the invention, I am aware of the fact that many modifica tions can be made therein by any person skilled in the art without 'departing lfrom the scope of the invention as expressed in the claims. Therefore, I do not Wish to be limited to the details herein shown and described, but what I do claim is 1. As an article of manufacture', a casing for the purpose described comprising)- amain chamber for receiving water from a pipe or the like, said chamber having a. tangent oifset beyond one end thereof, a nozzle in said offset, a Wheel rotatably supported by said casing concentric with said chamber and beyond its end in position for receiving the discharge of Water from said nozzle, and a diaphragm in said chamber parallel with the plane of they Wheel for operating an electric alarm.
2. As an article of manufacture, a device for the purpose described comprising a casting having an upright partition therethrough, a complete chamber on one side of the partition Within the casting, a chamber on the other side of the partition, an oset from the rst named chamber in alinement with the second chamber, a Wheel rotatably supported in the second chamber, and a nozzle supported in said oHset in position to 2 direct its discharge against said Wheel for rotating it,
3. In a device of the character described, the combination of a main casting having tWo chambers therein separated from each other, a rotary Wheel in one of said chambers, means connected with the other of said chambers for directing a j et of Water against said Wheel for rotating it, an electric alarm device supported on the side of said casing at the end of said other chamber, and means controlled by the pressure of Water therein for operating said electric alarm device, said j et directing means constituting the vent for said other chamber.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand, in the presence of tvvo subscribing Witnesses.
GEORGE I. ROCKWOOD.
