UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HUGH HENRY BROIVN, OF ORANGE BLUFF, FLORIDA.
MATCH-SAFE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 575,690, dated January 26, 1897. Application filed August 11,1896. Serial No. 602,411. (No model) To all whom, it; may concern:
Be it known that I, HUGH HENRY BROWN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Orange Bluff, in the county of Nassau and State of Florida, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Match-Safes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts'wherever found throughout the several views.
This invention relates to match-safes, and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class which is simple in conconstruction and operation, and which is adapted to discharge the matches by revolving a cylinder in which they are placed, said cylinder being mounted in a suitable cylindrical casing.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which- Figure 1 is a transverse section of my improved match-safe; Fig. 2, a central longitudinal section thereof, and Fig. 3 a transverse section of a modified form of construction.
In the practice of my invention I provide a cylindrical casing 5, which is provided with legs or supports 6, by which it is held in a horizontal position, and mounted in said casing is a supplemental cylindrical casing 7, which closely fits within the casing 5, and is free to revolve therein, and the supplemental inner casing 7 is provided with heads or ends 8, both of which may be detachably connected therewith, and one of which is preferably so connected.
Each of the heads or ends 8' is provided with annular flanges 9, and the inner casing 7 is provided at regular intervals with longitudinal side slots or openings 10, four of which are shown, and one of the side walls of these slots or openings is formed on radial lines. and the other is inclined backwardly and outwardly, as clearly shown.
The-inner casing or the space therein is divided by longitudinal radial plates 11 into four equal compartments or chambers 12, and the plates 11 are secured to the radial walls of the slots or openings 10.
Formed in one side of the outer casing 5 is a longitudinal slot or opening 13, below which is a longitudinal receiver 14, which is secured to said outer casing, and the operation will be readily understood from the foregoing description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the following statement thereof.
The matches are placed in the compartment 12 through the openings or slots 10 and the slot 13, in which case the inner cylinder is revolved until each of said compartments have been filled with matches, or one of the ends 8 may be removed and said compartments filled at the end. Whenever it is desired to take a match from the safe, all that is necessary is to revolve the inner casing by means of one of the end flanges D, and as soon as there are matches in each of the compart ments 12 one or more matches will be discharged through the opening 13 as each of the slots or openings 10 registers therewith.
The object in employing the partitionplates 11 is to provide means for always holding the matches in proper position and to prevent them from falling crosswise of the inner casing as the same is revolved.
It will be understood that the matches are dropped into the receiver 14 as the inner cas ing is revolved, and in Fig. 3 I have shown a modified form of construction in which my improved match-safe is made of sheet metal, and the inclined wall of the slots 10 is made by bending inwardly a portion of the inner casing, so as to form a flange 15.
The operation of this form of construction will be the same as that hereinbefore described, and any suitable means may be provided for revolving the inner cylinder or casing.
The match-safe shown in Figs. 1 and 2 may be composed of any desired material, either wood or metal, and the ends or heads 8 are preferably provided with deep annular grooves 16, or they may be ornamented in any desired manner.
This device is well adapted to accomplish the result for which it is intended, and it is evident that changes in and modifications of the construction herein described may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.
Having fully described my invention, 1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A match-safe consisting of an outer eylindrical casing, and inner supplemental cylindrical casing which is revolubly mounted therein and which is provided at its sides with longitudinal slots, and said outer casing being provided at one side with a slot or openin g through which the matches are discharged, and said inner casing being provided with longitudinal partition-plates by which the interior thereof, is divided into separate compartments, in each of which is formed one of the longitudinal slots or openings, substantially as shown and described.
2. A match-safe consisting of an outer cylindrical casing, and an inner, supplemental, cylindrical casin g, which is revolubly mounted therein, and which is provided at its sides with longitudinal slots, and said outer casing being provided at one side with a slot or opening, and also with a receiver which is arranged below said slot or opening, and said inner easing being provided with longitudinal partition-plates, by which the interior thereof, is divided into separate compartments, in each of which is formed one of the longitudinal slots or openings, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of the subscribing witnesses, this 27th day of July, 1896.
HUGH HENRY KROXVN. \Vitnesses:
