GARY, or ATLANTA, panorama.
. TROLLEY-HANGER. I
Application filed october ll, 19 13. ffs iain .,'ze4,ee4. a, i
To all whomit may concern; i
Be it known that I, J oHNT. GARY, a citi zen of the United States, residingat At lanta, in the county of Fulton and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trolley-Hangers, of which the following is a specification, ref erence being had to the accompanying drawlngs. e b This invention relates to new and useful improvements in trolley hangers and the primary object of the invention is to provide a device of this character-which may be quickly and readilyapplied to use and adjusted, as desired.
A further object of the invention resides in providing a device which is capable of application to use in connection with wires of various sizes and a still further object of the invention resides in providing a de v vice which is simple and durable in con struction, inexpensive to manufacture and one which will be very eflicient and useful in operation.
-With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter referred to and more particularly specification and claims. a
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this application, Figure 1 is an elevation of the device applied to use. Fig.
2 is a top plan view of the body portion thereof. Fig. 3 is a bottom plan-view of the cap member, and Fig. 4 is a section through the body and cap member applied together.
In describing my invention, I shallrefer to the drawing in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views and in which 1 indicates the body of my improved hanger having formed at diametrically opposite points thereon the projecting arms 2 and formed on said arms are flanges which are bent to form arcuate ears 3, the same being adapted to receive therein a suspension or span wire 4. The upper face of the body 1 which is raised to a plane slightly above the plane of the arms 2, is grooved arcuately, as shown at 5 to receive therein said suspension wire when the hanger is applied to use, and said body 1 is provided with a central bore 6. A cap member 7 is adapted to be applied to the top face of said body 1,
andfla member 12 which,
pointed out in the.
. the same being providedwith a central open- 111g 8 to aline with. the bore 6 of the body.
The contactingface of said cap? is pro-,1
vided Witha plurality of arcuate intersectmg grooves 9 which are adapted. to cooperate withthe groove oof the body 1. y The grooves 9 are of various, depths, so as to accommodate wires of, various sizes, it be- Specification ortettersratne i fgtnt dld go,1
ing understood that in theapplication of the cap member to tl1e,body,one of said grooves 9 alinesor registers withthe groove 5 .in sald body. 3 In order to secure the cap member toitheebody, a bolt 10 is introduced through the ,alining bores 6 and 8 of said members, yso that the threaded end of said bolt willprojectbelow the under face of the body 1. A split-spring washer 11 is applied to the bolt between the head thereof and the upper face of the. cap member 7 A l v for convenience, may be. termed a thimble, is engaged with the lower threaded end of said bolt and against said body,
adapted to be turned home thereon to the cap member and body will be securely held together and the flanges on the arms Qare then adaptedto be disposed into engagement Wlilll the span wire ,4, while the a lower end of the thimble 12 .is suitably engaged with the trolley wire 18. When the members are so secured together, the same are not adapted for casual disengagement, but may be quickly and readily engaged, when desired and if through constant use, the threads of the bolt l0become worn so as to cause a play between said members, saidplay will betaken up by theaction of the washer 11, which is applied on the bolt between the head thereof and the upper face of the cap member.
From the foregoing description of the construction of my improved 1 device, the manner of applying the same to use will be readily understood and it will be seen that I have provided a device which is simple and durable in construction, inexpensive to manufacture and one which will be very eflicient and useful in operation.
Among the advantages possessed by my device, it will be particularly noted that owing to the peculiar construction of the hanger, it is impossible for it to burnout ers in use and as my improved hanger avoids this objection, its advantages ill at 'on'cebe apparent.
While I have particularly described the elements best adapted to perform the functions set forth, it is obvious that various changes in form, proportion and in the minor details of construction may be resorted to Without departing fromthe spirit or sacrificing any of the principles of the invention. v I
Having thus described this invention, What I claim is v 1. In a trolley hanger, a body member having a pair of oppositely extending arms formed thereon, the'upper face of said body having a transversely extending arcua'te, groove formed therein to receive a suspension wire, the upper face of said body being disposed ina plane slightly above the upper faces of said arms whereby the base of the groove in the body is disposed in the same plane asthe upper faces of said arms to provide an'even bearlng surface for sald suspension Wire the entire length of the hanger, flanges formed on the outer ends ofsaid arms for engagement with the suspen-' sion Wire, said flanges being disposed to one Copies of this patent may be obtained for in cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents,
side of the longitudinal center of said groove to force said suspenslon wire to frictionally engage one side wall of said groove, a cap member for application to said body to retain the wire in place therein, and means to secure said cap member and body together.
2. In a trolley hanger, a body member having a pair of oppositely extending arms formed thereon, the upper face of said body having a transversely extending groove formed therein to receive a suspension wire,
flanges formed on the outer ends of said arms for engagement with the suspension wire, a cap member adapted for application to the upper face of said body, said cap member having a plurality of transversely extending grooves of various depths formed in the contacting face thereof, any one of said grooves being adapted for cooperation with the groove in the upper face of the body, and means to clamp said cap member and body together.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
