UNITED STATES f PATENT OFF CE.

, RAIL CHAIR AND CLAMP.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOSEPH \V. Rnnsn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Salt Lake City, in the countyljof Salt Lake and I W btate of Utah, have invented certain new erence indicate like parts throughout the several figures and as described in the specification forming a part of th1s application and pointed out in the appendedclaims.
In said drawings in which I have shown a substantial embodimentfof my invention, Figure l is a planview of one end portion of a channel tie in which my clamping device may be used. Fig. 2 is the other end portion of a similar tie with a portion of a railway rail fastened thereon with myimproved clamp and rail chair. Fig. 3 is a vertical section thereof on line a" m of Fig. 2,.
Fig. 41 is a side elevation of the device in placeon a portion of a rail and showing the tie sectioned on line 2 z of Fig. 2. ,Fig. 5 is a view in perspective ofone of the clamps. Fig. 6 is a view in perspective of one of the rail seats detached. Fig.7 is an elevation of the device as modified to hold the meeting ends of two rails. Fig. 8 is a view in per, spective of the clamps as modified to secure the meeting ends of two rails.
As illustrated in the drawings, a metal tie of channel shape, A, has portions of the bottom cut and struck up to form clampengaging lugs B. A portionof the free end of each of said lugs is bent to conform to and contact withthe upper side of a rod or bolt 0 which is riveted in the side walls a of the tie. A portion of each of said side walls a is cut out adjacent the rails,as at b, in order that the rail D will not contact with said side walls. A clamping rail support is provided in the channel ofsaid tie near each end thereof, which engages and supports the rail D placed thereon. Each of said supports consists of two opposed clamp Specification of Letters Patent.
in place in the tie, engages said lug B and below sa1d,bolt C; Said clamps are set; at
an incline and curved or bent to engage with'the upper side of the base flange (l of Patented Oct.6,1914.1 Application filed February 16,1914. Serial 110.819412, a
members 1, shown in detail in Fig. 5 The 1; toe portion 2 of each of :said clamps, when the rail, and each has the end portion 8,bent
at right angles to the base, to engageTwith the web portion 0 of the rail, The heel portion 3 curved upwardly to form a seating channel, within which the end of the rail chair or seat 4: rests. Each of said seats 4 extends from one of said seating channels to the opposed one in the other clamp member 1,
of each of said clamp members is and supports medially thereon the rail D. 1 Each pair ofclamp members 1 with the respective rail-seat 4 constitutes a transverse truss support for the rail carried thereby and, as each is slightly resilient I thus provide a cushion support for the rails held.
thereon. 1
WVhen the rails are in place and supported by the rail seats and clamps, the bolts 6 are inserted through and fastened in the side walls a of the tie, each bolt "bearingagainst 1 the upper curved face of the adjacent clamp 1, to prevent unintentional removal of the clamp. When the rails are burdened with the rolling stock the portion 8 of the clamps will grip the web portion of the rail andthe greater the burden the firmer :the grip will a be on the rail. The clamps 1 and the r-ail seats 1 are made of sufficient widththat the edges thereof will contact with the side walls a of the tie. meeting ends of two rails, the vertical por tion 8 of the clampsis extended laterally in the form of a, fishplate member 9, having perforation 10 therein through which the For use at the junction or a usual bolts 11 may be fastened, as shown-in Fig. 7. I a Having thus described my mventlonl desire to secure by Letters Patent and claim 1. In combination with a metal tiej of channel shape having portions of its bottom struck upward; of clamp engaging bolts secured in the side walls of saidftiey curved clamp members bearing against said bolts and bent to engagethe web portion of a rail and provided with a transverse channel near the foot of each; and a rall seat with the ends carried in said transverse channels.
, 2. In combination with a metal tie of channel shape having portions of'its bottom struck upward; of clamp engaging bolts fastened through the side Walls ofsaid tie; opposed clamp members bent to engage the Web portion of a rail placed therebetween and to bear against said bolts and With one end of each resting on the bottom 0]": the tie and provided With a horizontal transverse recess therein; and a curved rail seat with the end portions carried in said recesses.
8. In combination With a metal tie of channel shape With upstanding sidewalls and bolts secured therein across said channel; of clamp members arranged in pairs and bent to engage the base flange and Web portion of a rail placed therebetween; a foot JOSEPH W. REESE.
