COMBINATION RAIL-TIE AND RAIL-CLAMP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 3, 1913.
Application filed October 19, 1912. Serial No. 726,722.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LUM L. G-OMILLIQN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Shreve, in the county of Conecuh and State of Alabama, have invented a new and useful Combination Rail-Tie and Rail-Glamp; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a new and use- 1 ful combination rail tie and rail clamp.
As one of the objects of the invention, it is the aim to provide a simple and efficient rail clamp seated in a recess of the tie, there being a wedge shaped key extending transversely of the tie and co-acting with a member of the clamp, for forcing the clamp against a beveled wall of the recess for holding the clamp in place, and securing the rail against displacement.
In the drawings there are disclosed certain features of construction, but in practical fields these features may require alterations, to which the patentee -is entitled, provided the alterations fall within the scope of the appended claims.
The invention comprises further features and combination of parts, as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings and claimed.

Referring to the drawings 1 designates the rails, while 2 denotes the rail tie.
The tie is provided with recesses, one at each end, to receive the clamps 4. The recesses 3 are a little longer than the clamps 4t, and one end of each recess is provided with an under cut beveled wall 5, in contact with which the beveled end 6 of the clamp is forced, so as to prevent upward displacement of one end of each clamp. One end of each clamp is provided with an integral lug 7, under which the base 8 of the rail engages, so as to assist in holding the rail 1 in place. As shown in the drawings the rail rests upon the tie, but not upon the clamp. The other end portion of each clamp is constructed with a lug, through which a clamp bar 11 extends. This clamp bar is provided at each end with recesses Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail sec-- 12 and 13, the recess 12 receives or engages the base of the rail, while a wedge bar or key 14 transversely engages the recess 13, so as to force the clamp bar 11 firmly in contact with the base of the rail. This ac tion also forces the opposite side of the base of the rail firmly under the lug 7, so as to prevent displacement of the rail. The wedge bar or key 14 extends transversely of the tie and the recess 3, at one end of each recess 3. The wedge bar or key not only holds the clamp bar 11 in place, butalso holds the rail clamp in the recess 3, owing to it engaging the upper face of one end of the rail clamp. As each wedge bar or key is forced in place, thereby clamping the rail between the bar 11 and the lug 7, the beveled end 6 of the rail clamp is forced firmly in contact with the under cut beveled wall 5 of the recess 3. One end of each recess 3 is provided with an auxiliary recess 15, which temporarily receives one end of the clamping bar 11 (which is only partially inserted through the lug 10-), as the rail clamp 4 is dropped or placed in the recess 8.
A pin or the like 16 is inserted through the smallest end of each wedge bar or key, so as to prevent the key from being wit-hdrawn, or accidental displacement thereof.
The foregoing sets forth a simple and eflicient combination rail tie and rail clamp, which is disclosed in the accompanying drawing, and one which has been found desirable and practical.
The invention having been set forth, what is claimed as new and useful is 1. In combination, a rail tie having a recess provided at one end with an under cut beveled wall, a rail clamp arranged in said recess and provided with a beveled end to engage the under cut beveled wall, said rail clamp having an integral lug, under which the rail engages, and provided with a second lug, a clamp bar extending through the second lug and provided at one end with a recess to receive the opposite side of the base of the rail, the clamping bar having a second recess at its other end, and means engaging the second recess for forcing the clamping bar against the base of the rail so as to firmly hold the rail between the clamping bar and the first lug, said means also acting to force the beveled end of the rail clamp in contact with the under cut wall of the recess of the tie.

In combination, a rail tie having a recess provided at one end with an under cut beveled wall, a rail clamp arranged in said recess and provided with a beveled end to engage the under cut beveled wall, said rail clamp having an integral lug under which the rail engages, and provided with a second lug, a clamp bar extending through the second lug and provided at one end with a recess to receive the opposite side of the base of the rail, the clamping bar having a second recess at its other end, a wedge key vextending transversely of the tie to engage the second recess of the clamping bar to force the clamping bar firmly in engagement with the base of the rail so as to force the base in contact with the first lug, said Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents.
