To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, ALBERT F. EAGLE- srox and FLOYD C. EAoLEsToN, citizens of the United States, residing at Manbar. in the county of Logan and State of lVest Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Railway-Rail Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in rails without disturbing the remaining ties or the rails.
l/Vith these and other objects in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction as hereinafter shown and described and then specifically pointed out in the claims; and in the drawings illustra tive of the preferred embodiment of the invention Figure 1 is a side elevation of a conventional tie having the improved fastening devices applied and with the rails located upon the tie, the rails being in sections transversely. Fig. 2 is a plan View of the parts shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detached perspective view of one of the movable rail engaging members.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
The improved device may be applied to railway ties of various forms, and it is not desired therefore to limit the device to any specific form of the tie, but for the purpose of illustration the improved device is shown applied to a metal tie represented at 10 and including an upper flange 11. The rails are represented conventionally at 1213 and are spaced apart the usual distance and bear upon the upper face of the tie.

tion 14 secured to the tie by rivets or other suitable fastening devices 15. Each of the bases 14 is formed with a rail brace portion 16 which engages against the outer face of the web of the rail 12 and the inner face of the web of the rail 13 as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2.
Secured upon the flange portion of the tie internally of the rail 12 and externally of the rail 13 are supporting devices including. base portions 17 riveted or otherwise secured to the tie as represented at 18. Each of the securing devices is formed with an overlmngiug projecting portion 19, preferably slightly oblique to the longitudinal plane of the tie with the free edge spaceda considerable distance from the flange of the rail. as shown. Bearing upon the tie between the rails 1213 and the members 17, and over the flange and against the inner face of the web of the rail 12. and over the flange and against the rail 13. are clamp members each including a base portion 20 bearing upon the rail and beneath the overhanging portion 1 of the member 17. Each of the members 20 likewise includes a rail brace portion 21 which bears against the inner face of the web of the rail 12 and against the outer face of the web of the rail 13. The upper faces of the portions of the members 20 which extend beneath the overhangs 19 are slightly tapered to correspond to the oblique underface of the overhanging portion as represented in Fig. 1. The inner edges of the base portions 17 extend at a slight angle to the transverse plane of the tie while the adjacent edges of the members 20 are correspondingly angular, so that a slight wedge-like action is produced between the members 20 and 17 when the members 20 are forced into position as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The members 1-l16 will bear closely against the rails at one side while the portion 2021 will bear closely against the rails at the opposite side and will coact with the members 1718 to produce the required clamping action to firmly and securely support the rails, and will preferably be so constructed as to require a considerableforce such as would be imparted by the blows of a sledge or like implement, to cause them to be properly seated in position with the ends of the members 2021 flush with the edges of the flange 11 of the tie.
Rising from each of the portions 20 of the holding devices is a rib 22 through each one of which a rod 23 is mounted to oscillate, the rod having laterally directed ends 24 which bear against the side edges of the flange 11 of the tie when the projections are turned in downward position, and thus locking the members. 20 in position, and when turned in a vertical position, or free from the flanges ll of the tie, the holding members can be driven from their position and thus releasing the tie from the rails. At the left of Fig. 1 the rod 23 is located with the terminals 24 in their locking position, while at the right the terminals are shown in their upright position with the members 20 released, to illustrate the action of the rods.
W'ith a device thus constructed it will be obvious that the rails are firmly clamped to the ties and prevented from movement both laterally and vertically.
if it is desired to remove the tie it is only necessary to rotate the rods 28 to turn the terminals Qtinto upward position as represented at the right of Fig. 1, knock the members 20 loose from their position and remove them, then dig the tamping mate rial from beneath the ties and draw the latter endwise to cause the portions 14-16 to be moved away from the rails. The tie is then dropped at one end to bring the upper end of the portion 16 which has been engaged with the rail 13 below the lower face of the rail 12. when the tie can be removed bodily and without disturbing the other ties or their fastening devices. This is an important advantage in applicants device and materially increases its efiiciency and utility.
The improved device is simple in construction, can be inexpensively manufactured and applied, and operate effectually for the purposes described.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. The combination with a railway tie and rail, of a rail holding means engaging with one side of the rail, an abutment on the other side of the rail with its inner edge oblique to the longitudinal plane of the rail, a rail engaging memberhaving an obliquely directed edge engaging the oblique edge of said abutment, said rail engagin member having a bearing rising theretrom, and a member mounted for rotation in said bearing and with laterally directed terminals engageable with the opposite sides of the tie to lock the rail en- Gopies of this patent may be obtained for gaging member from movement relative to said abutment.
In a railway rail fastener, a rail base adapted to be rigidly connected to a railway tie in position to bear against a rail at one side, a holding device adapted to be rigidly connected to a railway tie spaced from the rigid. rail brace and including an overhanging portion, a movable rail brace adapted to bear against the rail at the other side and extending beneath the overhang of the holding device, and a rod mounted for rotation upon said movable brace and having laterally directed terminals adapted to engage a railway tie and prevent the lateral'dis )lacement of the holding device.
3. The combination with a railway tie and the rails supported thereon, of a rail fastener comprising rail braces fastened rigidly to the tie and bearing against the outer face of one rail and the inner face of the other rail, holding devices rigidly fastened to the tie and spaced from the rails, movable rail braces bearing respectively against the inner face of one rail and the outer face of the other rail and beneath the overhang portions of the holding devices, a rod mounted for rotation upon each of said movable rail braces and having laterally directed terminals for engaging thetie and preventing lateraldisplacement of the movable braces.
