JAMES EDDIE MELTON, or SENATOBIA, MIssrssrPrr.
COAL-GRATE DAMPER. 1
Specification of Letters Patent.
To all whom it may concern:
Be itknown that I, JAMES ED IE MELTON, a citizen of the UnitedStates, residing at Senatobia, in the county of :Tateand State of Mississippi, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Coal-Grate Dampers, of whichthe following is a specification.
My invention relates to heat regulating devices, particularly to dampers, and has for its object the provision offa novel form of flap damper adapted to be used in connection with coal grates ofthe type commonly found in dwellings, the damper being so disposed in relation to the grate that its frame rests upon the top of the fire lining above the arch of the grate frame.
An important object of my invention is to provide a damper of thischaracter which will divide the draft so that the fire will burn evenly from end to end of the grate and also permit of the regulation of the amount of draft, and of the passage of gas to the smoke flue when closed, and which will also prevent an unnecessary consump tion of fuel. f
Another object is to provide a device of this character which has its weight distributed in such a manner that the material upon both sides of the axisof the pivoted damper will balance regardless of to what a plan view of the damper removed from the grate.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates an ordinary formof grate disposed withinthe usual casing or fire lining which comprises back and side walls 2 and 3, respectively. As is common ly the practice, the wall l of the building is provided with arecess 5 within which the casing is disposed, the back wall 2 thereof being spaced from the wall 4 of the building, as shown. The wall lis further provided with a flue 6 communicating with the recess 5, the side and back walls of the cas just of its rear edge, 12
therecess with the flue. The features just described are common and :well known in the art and areshown pose of illustrating the of my device.
merely for the puradaptation and use tobe placed upon the topedges of the casing or liningand comprises a frame consisting of a main portion 7 and arms 8, the main portion 7 resting upon the back 2 of the casing and walls 3. 8 are provided with grooves 9 forthe re-. ception of trunnions 10 formed on the movable damper or plate 11 adjacent the front edge thereof. The plate 11 is held in its normally horizontal position within the supporting frame by means of the engagement with an inwardly proj'ecting flange 13 formed on the main portion? of theframe. At a point substanthe arms 8 restingupon the side Ad acent their free ends the arms Patented 0017.6, 19121. v Applicationfiledlannary8,1914. Seria1No.811,071 i ing or lining terminating at the junctioniofr tially in a line with the axis of the plate 3 11, a downwardly extending rigid curved arm 14 is provided which has. extending. therethrough. an aperture 15 which may be engaged by the point of a poker forshifting the angular position of the plate 11. I
i It is to be noted that theforwardportion of the plate 11 is formed heavy and thick,.as
shown at 16, in order that the weight of the .material upon both sides of the axis will balance, thus causing the plate 11 to remain in any angular moved.
Each side of the plate 11 is position to which it may be which flue 6 openings form an important feature as they cause the draft to be divided and act upon both ends of the combustion and preventing the waste of fuel.
It will be observed that the provision of a smoke and gas exit is therefore assured and that the fire will burn evenly even when the damper is closed. When increased draft is desired it is merely necessary to open the damper by swinging the plate 11 to the decut away ad jacent the arms 80f the frame, as shown at p 17, toprovide openings or spaces 18 through 1 gas and smoke may escape into the when the damper is closed; These fire, thus causing perfect p 1.00
sired angle by means of the curved arm 14 formed thereon. It will also be observed.
that the plate 11 is so constructed and arranged that when it is swung openthe opening is at the rear of the casing and the flue, thus causing the draft to pass through the i I claim is:
A damper comprising a frame, a plate having a relatively thick forward portion, said plate being journaled adjacent its thick pora downwardly pro-.
tion within said frame,
jecting curved arm on said plate adjacent said thick portion the metal in said thick portion of said plate and in said curved arm being so distributed as to produce equal weight on both sides of the pivotal axis of the plate, and said plate provided at its ends with portions' cut-away to distribute the draft and -permit of the passage of smoke and gas when the damper is closed.
In testimony, whereof I hereto affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
