N Till1 @STATES PATIENT FFICE.
JOSEPH TAYLOR .AND WILLIAM TAYLOR, OF ROWLAND, NEVADA.
SLI-IEE? HOOK OR CATCHER.
To all collo/mr zt may concern Be it known that we, Josnrir TMLon and lV'iLmAM Tarma. citizens of the United States, residingr at Rowland, in the county o t' Elko, State of Nevada. have invented certain new and useful ln'iprovemcnts in Sheep Hooks or Catchers: and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact" description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the saine.
This invention relates to sheep hooks or catchers ogt' that general class having a pair of spring pressed jaws held open by a tri ger, the `trigger being tripped by engage- Inent with the leg of a sheep whereupon the jaws automatically grasp and securely hold the leg.
An object of the present invention is to provide a tool of this character having pivoted jaws, the trigger beingr equipped with a spring which holds the trigger in operative position when the jaws are open, the trigger further beingr equipped .with terminal spaced rejections, one of which bears against thei'jaws tor holding the saine open, and the other oi which performs the function of stops which ,are adapted to engage with the j we and prevent the trigger from being disengaged entirely from the jaws upon opening of the saine, while at the saine time performing the additional function of limiting opening movement of the jaws.
lWith these and other objects in view, this invention resides in the novel features of oohstructon, formation, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully'described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which.:-
Figure l is a side elevation of the device with the jaws in open. position. Fig. f2 is a side elevation of the device with tht jaws closed. Fig. 3 is a cross sectional View taken on line V3--3 of Fig. l. Fig. Il is a see-- tional view on line Atmel of Eig. l.
eiferring to the drawing, the numeral l designates a ferrule which is engaged by one end or" the handle 2, which may be oi' any desired length. Iivotally connected to the ferrule l are forwardly and outwardly bowed jaws 3, one kof said jaws being provided at its extremity with a lug,r -t which is adapted to coperate with the resilient catch 5 mounted upon the adjacent jaw so that when the lug is engaged by, the catch the jaws will be held in their locked position.

The extremities of the jaws 3 are further provided with recesses and sockets `(S and' 7 which cooperate with the pin and extension S and 9 carried by the extrennty ot' the `adjacent jaw. thus when the extremities of the jaws a re in contactingr relation, the Same will be firmly held together. The jaws 3 are provided with slots .l0 which the `trigger har 1l, which is-forined from sections 1Q. each section hein; r provided with Vheads 13, and spaced inner and outer shoulders 14. and l5. The heads 13 are of such size that when the jaws are in their spread or open positions the heads will rest' against the outer surfaces of the jaws 3 while the inner shoulders 14 will he spaced from the inner surfaces of the jaws. and at which time the outer shoulders will engagethe` inner surfaces of the jaws, thus holding the jawsopen.
are engaged by rafeafeaocec,1914. i
llavino one end engaged with the outer4 end ot the ferrulc l is a coil spring 1G, the other end ot which is engaged with the trig- `rer bar 1l, which exerts an outward pressure thereupon so that the outer shoulders will engage the jaws so as to hold the Same open, but when the trigger bar is moved inwardly the outer lshoulders will disengage the jaws, thus perrnitting r the jaws to close.
The inner surfaces of the jaws are r0- vided with webs l? which have curved et ges 18 which are preferably covered with a suitable packing 19 so that when the jaws close and the animals leg is engaged between the curved edges of the flanges, bruising of the leg is prevented.
The outer surfaces of the jaws are rovided with sockets 2O which are en age. by the forward ends ol the bowed lean springs 2l, the rear ends of which being fixed to the terrule l, said springs serving to close the jaws after the trigger bar has been inovcd inwardly so that the outer shoulders l5 disengage thejaws.
The trirger bar 1l is provided with a. rubber buil'er 22 which is adapted to engage the leg of the animal when the tool is moved forwardly, thus actuating the trigger bar so that the jaws mafy spring together and grip the leg of the animal. between the curved edges of the flanges 17. l
ln operation the. jaws are spread soltha; the outer shoulders l5 engage the same, thus holdingr the jaws in their being obvious that the spring 16 will lhold the trigger bar so as to prevent the` 'jaws V 15 ibhe` ebelt-Ween after the trigger bar has been te'flby' Contact with' the animefs leg, and f e'rred by the extremities of the jaws ckingfengegement, as and for the pur- (j sel'lferth.
' nl teeief the class described yminimising sie, n pa-i1 of jews pveteiy connected eruie, leef springs having one of theiir ends Connected to the erruie end their other ends engaging the jews, said jaws having slees linnn l therein; e trigge ber heving iis ends slidabij; engaged in the slots, inner end ente? spaced shoulders Carried by the trigger bei', ehe outer shuders being adapted to engage the jews to' hold. 'the seme open, enges carried. by the jaws, seid ienges having @nm/*ed edges for engaging around the enin'mis ieg, a buffei cam'ied by die trigger bei" 'which when engag. by the en'nnuis leg shifts libe trigger i e0. Slisenguge the ouzei Vshouideis from ldie jaws, whereby seid j autonistieally Giese.
