' INVENTOR ffl am fi A TTOR/VEY pwwrnnnn nnmmoma, .13., or Bmneiirfb'nr, connnorxcur; r
To all whom it may concern Be it known-that I, WILBER F. HAMMOND,
J r., a citizen of the United States, residing Connecticut, have invented an Improvement in Keyhole-Guides, of which the followlng is a specification.
This invention relates to looks of the Yale type in which a fiat or corrugated and stepped key is inserted ina barrel and the barrel is rotated thereby to throw and re tract the bolt, and has for its object to provide the barrels with elongated, funnelshaped uides for the key, so that the difliculty of inserting the key in this type of locks, in the dark, shall be wholly avoided.
With these and other objects in view I have devised the novel structure which I willnow describe referring to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification and using reference characters to indicate the several parts.
Figure 1 is an elevation of a lock of the -Yale type, also variously known as a cylinder lock and a pin lock, having my novel key guide applied thereto; Fig. 2 a front elevation of the hub detached; Fig. 3 a side elevation of the barrel detached, showing the guide and barrelmade integral; Fig. 4 a side elevation, and Fig. 5 a rear elevation of a key guide adapted for attachment to the barrel of a lock already in use, and Fig. 6 is an elevation of a hub and barrel of this type as ordinarily constructed, showing holes drilled in the outer end of the barrel to receive the attaching pins of the key guide.
I 10 deliotes the case of the lock proper, 11 the bolt, 12 the cylinder lock casing and 13 the barrel or cylinder.
The mechanism of the lock and the pin mechanism, within the casing and barrel, are not illustrated as they form no portion of the present invention.
The invention consists in providing the outer face of the barrel with an oblong funnel-shaped guide 14, the purpose of which is to "guide the key and direct it intothe key hole 15. The guide may be said to consist of a mouth piece made funnel-shaped and preferably oblong, and a base having a key hole or slot registering with the key hole in the barrel of the lock. an .thekey of. the look. and. the: sides slope. from the rim into the ke hole.
1n practice, I ordinarily mare the sides a slightly concave curve, although this is not essential. The key guide may be formed ntegral with the barrel, as in ig. 3, or separate therefrom as in Figs. 4, 5 and 6. In provlding new locks with my novel key guide it is preferably formed integral with the barrel. The invention is equally ap licable however to looks already in use. or attachment to old locks, whether in use or not, I form the key guide independent of the barrel, as in F1g. 4, and provide it on the back with two pins 16 which are preferably angular and a slot 18 for the key. Two holes 17 are drilled in the face of the barrel,
as clearly shown in Fig. 6, and the guide is serting the key within the rim thereof. The
guide is ordinarily made oblon its greater diameter corresponding with t e height of the key slot and its sides are a slightly concave curve,' or if preferred a straight incline, from the rim to the key hole, so that all that is required is to place the key, with the right edge upward, within the run and push it forward, the inclined walls of the mouthpiece acting to cause it to pass without the slightest difiiculty into the key hole.
Having thus described my invention I claim 1. In a lock of the character described, the combination with a barrel having a key hole, of an oblong mouth piece surrounding the key hole and rotatable with the barlpiece is of course much longer and UNITED: STATES: PATENT oFrIoE. v
