1 UNITED sTATEs PATENT onrron.
WILEY STAFFORD, or inrrnrs, LOUISIANA.
sAW-sET.
To all whom it may concern: I Be it known that I, XVILEY STAFFORD, a
citizen of the United States, residing at J effris, in the parish of Concordia and State of Louisiana, have invented 'certam new and useful Improvements 111 Saw-Sets, of wh ch the following is a specification, reference be ing had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention comprehends certain new and useful improvements in saw sets and has for its primary object to rovide a saw set which may be readily ad usted for setting theteeth at the desired inclinations. I
Another object is to provide a saw set of this character, the punch and socket of which are adjustable longitudinally of the base member. i i
Another object is to providea saw set of this nature, having a gage upon the adjustable socket and novel means foradjusting the latter longitudinally of the base member and securing said socket in adjusted position.
Another object is to generally improve and amplify the construction and operation of devices of this character and thereby increase the efiiciency and commercial value of the same.
'With the above and other objects in View, this invention consists in the certain novel details of construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, i11;which-- Figure 1, is an elevational view of my im-- proved saw set. Fig. 2, is a top plan view of the same, a portion of the base member being broken away. Fig. 3, is a vertical longitudinal sectional view through the device, a portion of the base member being broken away and parts shown 1n elevation. Fig. 4,
is a fragmentary cross sectional view on the line 44 of Fig. 2, showing the gage upon the socket member.
Referring more specifically to the drawings in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, 1 indicates the base member which has one end beveled upon its upper face, as shown at 2 and is provided with a transverse elongated slot 3 extending longitudinally of the same at the inner end of the beveled portion, as clearly shown in Fig. 3.
The adjustable socket 1 is bifurcated at its lower end to form the spaced parallel legs Specification. of iletters Patent. Patented Sept. 29, 1914.: Application filed September 27, 1913. swam. 792,184.
5 for engagement'upon opposite sides of the .base member 1 and each leg 5 is provlded with a circular opening 6, one of the openings being threaded to receive the threaded end 7 of the clamping screw 8 positloned through the openings in the legs and through the transverse slot 3 to draw the legs 5'against'the opposite sides of the base member 1 and thus clamp the socket in adjusted position. The socket 1 is provided with a forwardly extended portion 9, the lower end of which is beveled and spaced above the upper face of the base member 1 and a vertical circular opening 10 is provided in the main and extendedpportions of the socket, the lower end of the main por tion ofthe socket being closed while the semicircular opening 10 is "formed in the lower end of the extended portion of the socket, said opening forming the lower end of the openingor bore 10, while the closed lower end of the main portion of the socket forms a surface 11, the purpose of which will presently appear. I
A punch 12 is positioned 10 and has a reduced end 13 of semi-circular formin cross-section, thus providing the within the bore flattened inner face 14 for engagement with 12 for forcing the reduced end 18 through the opening 10 into engagement with a saw tooth to set the same and that the spring 15 automatically returns the punch to its uppermost position after the same has been engaged with the saw tooth.
hen the device is to be used for setting, the saw is placed in proper position upon the upper face of the base member 1 with a tooth engaged upon the inclined end 2 of the base member 1 and beneath the lower end of the punch 12, it being understood that the socket 1 has been properly adjusted and secured in adjusted position, the adjustment being indicated by the gage 16 upon the front face of the socket Land one of the legs 5, as clearly shown in Fig.4.
. and will be highly eflicient in use.
' without departing from the spirit of my in-' Vention. v
Having thus described my invention, What I claim is 1. A device of the class described c0mprising a base member, an angularly adjustable socket mounted upon said base memher, said socket member having a vertical circular opening therein, a punch mounted for reciprocation in said opening, means for resiliently retaining said punch in its uppermost position, and means for preventing rotation of said punch within said circular opening.
.2. A device of the class described comprising a base member, an angularly adjustable socket mounted upon said base member, said socket being provided wlth a vertical opening therein having a lug formed in the WILEY STAFFORD. Witnesses a J. K. TURNER, JOHN LocKHART.
