Be it known that I, OSCAR D. GIBBS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Spokane, in the county of Spokane and State of Tliashington, have invented new and useful Improvements inBox-Lidding Machines, of which the following is a specification. p
rFhis invention relates to improvements in box lidding machines and one of the 'objects is to provide a machine in which a plural.- ity of lids may be stored orcarried by magazine and successfully and practically continuously supplied as boxes to be lidded are successfully positioned.
A further object is to provide a carriage on which the magazine and the box to be lidded are disposed, the carriage being shiftable into either of two positions to locate the magazine in a supply position or the box,y
in a position to `be lidded, meansbeing provided for elevating the carriage to an operative position either to locate a lid or apply a lid to the box.
Other features of novelty will be more fully described in connection with the ac companying drawings and will be more particularly pointed outv in and by the appended claims. y

As illustrated, the carriage includes horizontally disposed carriage beams 7 mount ed upon vertically disposed carriage guides 8, as indicated at 9. The lower ends of the vguides 8 are connected by horizontal guides "10 which engage the inner faces of the uprights 1 inoverlapping relations as will be clearly" seen by reference to Fig. 1. The lower guides 10 areheld in spaced relation from eachother by a rod 11 which also functions as a treadle elevating rod for raising the carriage `upon actuation of the treadle, as will presentlyappear. Treadle bars 12 are shown pivoted on the rod 11, inside of `the guides 10, washers 13 serving to" hold the guides` 10 in position. The carriage members 7 are connected by transversely dis posed bars 14 immediately beneath the carp riage sothat it will be seen that the carriage comprisesa rigid structure slidable vertically on the uprights 1. The carriage structure, as a whole, also includes a truck slidablel on the carriage horizontally into lids supplying `and lid lapplying positions.
As shown, the truck comprises a frame consisting of longitudinal members 15 connected by transverse members 16, castors or rollers 17 being applied to the longitudinal members 15 to run upon tracts 18 which may comprise angle irons secured to carriage `frame members 7. .Upon the longitudinal members 15 of the truck, I mount box guides 19, which may also bein the form of angle iron and which are provided with outwardly bent stop ends 20 and 21 for limiting 1novementof the truck in either direction. The stops 20 and21 abut against the frame uprights `land the latter may be faced with metal strips, asindicated at 22, to take up wear. On one end of the truck I mount a magazine which may comprise a base 23 on `which lids'24, are disposed, between corner holders 25. Lids of fruit boxes are usually in two parts and therefore I provide rods 26 for holding the stacks of lids in suitable spaced relation.` The truck is of sufficient length so that a box to be lidded may be slid on the` guides 19v upagainst the magazine, when the truck is in a box receiving position as indicated in Fig; 3. Here it will be seen that the box 27 occupies a position outside of the frame of the machine and this is the position which the truck will assume both when the box is positioned to be lidded and after the lid has been applied and the box is to be removed.
I will next describe the manner in which lids are transferred from the magazine so as to be applied to the boxes.
Lid suspending means is provided which consists of a pair of frames 27 both of which are pivotally mounted at 28 and 29 to I frame members 30, attached to the frame uprights 1 as indicated at 31. The frames 27 are shown rectangular in form and each is provided with an outermost bar 32 on which lids Suspenders are disposed. The particular form of lid suspender or holder, as shown in Fig. 7, comprises a pointed element 33 having a threadedl portion 34,
4whereby they may be vertically adjusted,
and' each having a polygonal head 36 to facilitate adjustmentv thereof. The frames 27 are pivoted so as to4 accommodate the ycentral bulge which usually occurs when the ends of the lids are pressed down upon the box and I reduce the extent of movement of fthe outer Aportions of the frames 27 with l tending pointed Suspenders 33, said upperi most Vlids will be held thereby in a suspended position as the magazine is lowered. The truck will then be shifted to dispose the box beneath the suspended lids, as shown in Fig. 5 andL the carriage will be elevated to abut the top of the box against the suspended lid or lids, and will be held in an elevated posi# tion until the lidsv are cleated into position on the box. As the truck is shifted from a lid supplying to a lid applying position it is desirable to lock the truck against movementfrom either of said positions.
As shown, I mount upon the transverse members 16 of the truck a locking bar 37 which is shown as being pivoted at 38 to one of said members 16. The other said members 1G is provided with a hanger 39 through which locking bar 37 extends and in which it is aorded a limited up and down movement. The outer end of the handle bar 37 terminates in a hand grip 40 whereby the locking bar may be operated and the truck shifted from one position to another. The locking bar 37 is provided with notches 41 and 42 adapted for engagement with a lock strip 43 mounted on and extending upwardly from one of the bars 14. The strip 43 and the bar 37 co-act with the stop ends 20 and 21 to positively lock the truck in either of the two positions to which it may be adjusted, in the present form. When the truck is in a forward position, as shown in Fig. 3, then the stops 21 lock the truck against movement to the left, and notch 42 in bar 37, engaging strip 43, locks the truck against movement to the right of 3. 'Ihe notch 41 serves a like purpose in locking' the truck against movement to the right.
I will next describe the manner in which the carriage is elevated to supply lids and thereafter apply the lids to the boxes.
On the outer ends of the treadle bars 12 I mount a tread 44 which is centrally slotted as indicated at 45. A. transif'erse board 46 is mounted on said bars 12, in spaced relation with respect to the tread 44, as shown more particularly in Fig. 9. The treadle is fulcrumed on the machine frame by strap hangers 47 which are pivoted at 48 to frame member 5 and at 49 to the treadle bars 12. The fulcrumed hangers permit of outward and inward movement of the treadle when the bar 11 tavels upwardly and downwardly in a straight line of movement.
Thus when the treadle is depressed from the position shown in Fig. l to the position shown in Fig. 5, the straps or links 47 will be under tension and the free ends of the treadle bars 12 will transmit thrust to the rod 11 to raise the carriage in the frame members 1. After the lids have been transferred from the magazine to the lid suspend-V ing devices and when the box has been elevated by the carriage into abutting relation with the suspended lid or lids, it is desirable to hold the box in the elevated position as shown in Fig. 5, until the lid or lids have been cleated or nailed to the box body, and for this purpose, I provide a locking means for locking the carriage in the position shown in Fig. 5 while the box is being nailed.
As illustrated, the locking device comprises a rod 50 which is pivotally mounted, as indicated at 51 to the frame of the machine. rllhe rod 50 extends through an opening 52 in the other members of the friction locking device, which is indicated at 53. Said member 53 is pivoted at 54 to the tread 44, by means of angle irons which span the tread 44 and the transverse support 4G. The forward end of the locking member 53 is enlarged to provide a weighted end 5G whereby the member will normally assume an unlocking position. rThe rear of the member 53 extends upwardly to form a tread 57 whereby the member 53 may be rocked into the position shown in Fig. 5 to frictionally lock the member 53 on. the rod 50 and hold the carriage in the elevated position shown in Fig. The opening 52 is disposed in such angular relation with respect to the longitudinal axis of the rod 50 as to result in the requisite frictional grip sufficiently to lock the machine in the posipermit of tight engagement between `the ends of the lids and thebox body.
I provide the box 58 for cleats Which are usually 'used in nailing lids, and it Will be seen by reference to Fig.y 6 that there Will be ample room to cleatzthe lids on the box from the top of the machine.
It is believed that the operation Will be clear from the foregoing description, and While I have herein shown and described one specific `form of my invention, I do not Wish to be limited thereto except forsuch' limitations as the claims may import;

holding means thereon comprising rocking members provided With pointed elements, means for advancing a supply of lids against said pointed elements to transfer the uppermost lid thereto and thereafter-abutting a box against the lid held by said elements, substantially as described.

In a box lidding machine, a machine frame, a carriage for supporting a box slidable on said frame in a straight path of travel, and mechanism for advancing said carriage toward a positioned lid comprising a-treadle pivoted to said carriage and fulcrumed on said frame, substantially as described. y d
\ 9: In a box lidding machine, a machine frame, a lid holder therefor, a box supporting carriage slidable on said frame in a straight path of travel, mechanism for advancing said carriage and its box toward said lid holder comprising a treadle loosely suspended on said frame and pivoted to said carriage, and locking .means comprising a member pivoted to the machine frame and a secondmember pivoted to the treadle and coacting'with said first-named member, substantially as described.
l0. ik box lidding machine provided with lid holding means comprising a rocking member provided with pointed lid holding lid near its nailing edge, that portion of the isc member on the opposite side of such rocking axis lying in the path of the bulging portion of the lid for actuation'thereby to rock said member in a direction to advance the pointed elements toward the box to be lifted, substantially as described.

A box lidding machine provided With a lid holding means comprising a rocking member provided With pointed lid holding elements located on one side of the rocking axis of the member for engagement With a y lid near its nailing edge, that portion of the Y advancing a filled box into abutting relation means for holding said box in abutting relawith al lid held by said means, and locking tion with said lid irrespective of variation of size and contents of the box, substantially as described.

In a box lidding machine, ay machine yframe, a lid holder therefor, a box supportlng carriage slidable on said frame, mechanisni for advancing said carriage and its box toward said lid holder comprising a treadle loosely suspended on said frame and connected with said carriage, and means ior locking said treadle when the box is in abutting relation against the lid, substantially as described.
