Be it known that l, Guantes H. SEARS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Bellingham, in the county of XVhatcom and State of lVashington, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Box-Fillers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in box fillers of the kind used to place cans of iish, or other canned food products, in shipping boxes and the object of my invention is to provide a semi-automatic device which Vis simple and rapid in operation and simple of construction.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying two sheets 4of drawings in which Figure l is a side elevation of my device, Fig. 2 is a front elevation of Fig. l, Fig. 3 is a separated, rearward elevation view of the can tray, Fig. 4 is a plan view of Fig. l, Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the upper end of the empty-box magazine, and Fig. 6 is a diagonal plan view of the lower end of said magazine. Similar characters refer to similar parts in the several views. Certain parts are broken away in order to show others hidden thereby.
More particularly: rlhe legs 2, 2, etc. of the f ame are fastened together by bars 2a, 2a, 2b, 2", etc. Cradle 9 is revoluble through an arc on gudgeons 9, 9 which are mounted for revolution in bars 2a, 2a. TWhen said cradle is in its lling position, shown in full lines, it bears on frame bar 2c and when turned to its dumping position, shown in dotted lines at 9, Fig. l, it bears on frame bar 2d. The right-hand end of cradle 9 is provided with stop bar 9b. Box magazine 4 has rear side 4b and front side 4, 4e. The lower end of said magazine terminates in foot board 4c which is in a plane parallel with and somewhat above the bottom of cradle 9 when the same is in its filling position. Side 4b of the box magazine serves as a stop for the left-hand side of foot board 4. A box st-op 5 on magazine side 4b is in the path of movement of the empty boxes d, e, f, etc., as they proceed down the magazine. Beginning at a point up magazine 4 a distance above stop 5 somewhat greater than the width of an empty box said magazine is widened from that point downward by a. distance somewhat greater than the thickness of stop 5. proceed down said magazine. Said drag terminates below at a point somewhat more than a box width above stop 5, Fig. 6. Drag 6 presses downward by its own weight on top of said empty boxes as they pass underneath and thereby retards their movement as they slide down the magazine. ln Fig. 6 the action of the empty boxes on reaching stop 5 is clearly shown. Here the lower lefthand corner of box f is bearing on stop 5 while its right-hand upper corner is bearing against side 4a. Because of the increased width of the magazine at this place said right-hand upper box corner is at a lower level than said left-hand upper corner and box f is retained diagonally in said magazine with box e bearing on its left-hand upper corner. To release box f from its full line position in Fig. 6 upward pressure is applied under its right-hand lower corner when, because of the friction betwen said upper corner and box e, said box moves to its dotted position at f where it is clear of stop 5 and can pass down the magazine, when the pressure beneath it is removed, and occupy the position g on foot board 4C, shown only in Fig. l. Shelf 7b, having left-hand stop 7 and front stops 7", 7e is iixed above and in front of cradle 9 parallel with the saine. Can tray S having front 8 with handles 8b, 8b, is suited to sit on shelf 7b as shown. Lever ll is mounted for partial revolution on brackets 1l which are fastened to the bottom of shelf 7b. Lug lla projects upward from lever l1 and enters hole 7g in said shelf. Can stop 11b projects upward from the right-hand end of lever ll in front of the right-hand end of said shelf. Counterweight 11d is attached to the left-hand end of said lever. The weight of tray 8 bearing on lug lla is sufficient to overcome said conterweight and retain lever 11 and can stop llb in their full line positions where the top of said stop is nearly flush with the top of shelf 7b. But when tray 8 is lifted from said shelf lug llEL passes upward through hole 7g and can stop 1lb passes upward to its dotted position in Fig. 2. The lower end of can rollway 10, which does not appear in Fig. l, terminates near and above the right-hand end of shelf 7". Can stop 1lb can pass between the neighboring ends of said shelf and said rollway.
My device operates as follows: Filled cans a, a, etc. roll down chute 10 from a preceding apparatus, not shown, and into tray 8 until it is lled where they are shown as cans Z), b, etc. The length of tray 8 is suited to hold as many of said cans as the length of box 7L. An operator is stationed in front of shelf 7l. lith his left hand he presses upward under box as described, which falling to foot board Llc, is drawn by' said hand on to cradle 9 to position h. rhen he grasps handles Sb, 8b in each hand and lifts tray 8 with cans Y), etc. and properly places said cans in box i. The upturned ends of the bottom of tray 8 prevent the cans from rolling off of the same while being carried to box 7L. As tray S is raised from shelf 7b can stop l b rises in frontof forward can fr and prevents the same from leaving chute l0. When cans Z2, o, etc. are placed in box it tray 8 is replaced on shelf 7l, causing lug ll:l to move downward and lever ll with can stop 1lb to again occupy their full line positions where said can stop is out of the way of cans a, ci, etc. and said cans roll into tray 8 until the same is again filled. rllhe operator places this tray full of cans in box z as before and repeats the described operations until box L is properly filled with said cans. Said operator then places his right hand on top of box L and shoves forward. This force rocks cradle 9 to its dotted position at 9 and carries box i to its dotted position at h. Pressure being then removed from box h it slides down chute 3 to positionA i where it is ready to receive its cover. Cradle 9 is now returned to its full-line position by hand, an empty box placed on the saine as before and filled with cans as already described.
I have found this device as described very satisfactory in practical use. However there are doubtless changes in detail which could be used to advantage without evading my claims which are,
l. n a box filler, in combination, a fixed can rollway, a removable can tray, a fixed can-tray shelf, an oscillatable can stop fulorumed on said shelf and having a part oc cupying said shelf depressible by said can tray and another part barring the exit from said rollway when said depressible part occupies said shelf but vacating said exit when said former part is depressed.

In a box filler in combination, a can rollway, a fixed can-tray shelf in proximity to the exit end of said rollway having a hole therethrough, a counter-weighted lever under said shelf, a lug on said lever in said hole in said shelf, a can stop on the unweighted end of said lever enterable between tlie proximateV ends of said rollway and said shelf and a removable can tray on said shelf bearing on said luv.
3. l'n a box ller in combination, a box magazine having a foot board, a rockable box cradle in proximity to said foot board, a can-tray shelf near said cradle, and a can rollway the exit end of which is proximate to said shelf.
el. ln a box filler in combination, a box magazine having a foot board, a rockable box cradle in proximity to said foot board when said cradle is in its filling position, and a box chute in proximity to said cradle when it is in its dumping position.
5. ln a box filler in combination, a rockable box cradle, a box magazine having a widened part and a foot board in proximity to said cradleI` and a box stop attached to said magazine at said widened part of the same.
6. In a box filler in combination, a rockable box cradle, a box magazine having a widened part and a foot board in proximity to said cradle, a box stop attached to said magazine at said widened part of the same, and a box drag hingedly attached to said magazine.
7. In a box filler in combination, a rockable box cradle, a box magazine having a foot board in proximity to said cradle, a can-tray support near said cradle, a can rollway in proximity to said can-tray support, a removable can tray on said support, and means to close the exit from said rollway operated by the removal of said trayfrom said support.
