To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, 'JAMEs JOHNSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hetland, in the county of Kingsbury and State of South Dakota, have invented new and useful Improvements in Paper-Roll Holders and Cutters, of which the following is a specification.

' The invention relates to a wrapping paper holder, and more particularly to the class of roll holders and cutters.

The primary object of the invention is the provision of a device of this characterwherein a roll of wrapping'paper that different lengths thereof may be had and the said lengths severed for use in bundling packages or the like, the device being adapted to automatically project a sufficient amount of the rolled paper so that it may be readily grasped for the quick and convenient pulling of the required length to be torn therefrom.

Another object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character wherein the same is adapted to automatically extend the severed or free end of the roll so that it will be in a convenient position for the grasping thereof when it is desired to draw any desired length of the paper for use in wrapping packages or the like.

A further object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character which is simple in construction, reliable and efficient in operation, strong,-durable, and in expensive in manufacture.

With these and other objects in'view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claim hereunto appended.

In the drawings: Figure 1 is a side elevation of a device constructed in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is a front vlew thereof. Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view through the same. Fig. 4 is a fragmentary vertical sectional view showing a modified form. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the cutter in the modified form. Fig. 6 is a fragmentary vertical longitudinal sectional view throng the frame.

Referring to the drawings in detail, the device comprises a supporting frame A, in-

'Arranged in the frame A at the front thereof above the plane of the rollers 21 and 22 is an automatic paper extending device and a cooperative cutter, which comprises superposed swinging frames 23 and 24, respectively, the side limbs of each being supported upon pivots 25 formed on the sides 10 of the supporting frames A and are provided with gripping jaws 26 between which is passed the free end portion of the paper from the roll 18, the jaw 26 on the frame 23 being beveled atits outer edge to form a knife blade 27 serving as a cutter for the paper so that it may be severed into any desired length when unwound from the roll 18. The jaws 26 of the respective frames 23 and 24 cooperate for gripping the paper while being cut by the blade 27, and thereafter will extend the cut end of the paper from the roll 18 so that it may be readily grasped for the pulling of the paper from the holder to acquire the desired length thereof for use in wrapping a bundle, package or the like.

After the desired length of paper hasbeen severed the weight 28 acts to lower the top frame 23, and by the cooperation of the jaws 26 the severed or torn end of the paper isextended without the holder to enable gripping of the paper for the pulling of the required length from the roll. 7

The lower frame 24 is'formed with cam projections 30 which] act .upon the inner rounded edge 31 of'the jaws 26 on the upper frame 23 during the lowering movement of both of the frames to separate the same to during the automatic tilting of. the frame so that the'paper is free 'to permit the pulling thereof from the'rollwhen required.
