CHARLES GATES, OF LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY, ASSIGNOR OF'ONE-I-IALF TO HENRY G'.
TROMPETER, OF LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY.
SAFETY HAT-PIN;
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES GATES, a citi- Zen of the United States, residingat the city of Louisville, in the county of Jefferson and State of Kentucky, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Safety Hat- Pins, of which the following is, a specification.
This invention relates to hat-pins adapted to be used. by ladies for fastening their hats LAn object of this invention is to construct a hat-pin whereby when the'same has been placed in a hat it will be impossible for the pin to become detached from the hat.
.A; further object is to provide a remov- "ably attached device for a pin which is adapted to be placed upon the point of the pin and be securely held in position thereon by means within the device.
Another object is" to provide a device adapted to receive and hold the points of pins, or other pointed instruments, whereby the same are retained in position, protected from in ury and prevented doing m ury,
and the many advantages of my device will be apparent from'the following description taken in connection with the claim.
Reference will now be had to the drawing accompanying, wherein like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in the several views, in whioh.-
, Figure 1, is a side elevation with the ball in position. Fig. 2 a similar view showing the removable ball in longitudinal section. Fig. 3 a perspective of the blank from which the tube is formed. Fig. la perspective of a modified form from which the tube may be formed." Fig. 5 aperspective of the tube as formed froni'the blank shown in Fig. 3. Fig. a perspectiveof the tube as formed from the blank shown in Fig. 4.
Referring tothe drawing the reference numeral 1- designates a pin having a tube as shown in Fig. 5, or it may be a sepafiXed head 2+ and removable head -8-. These heads are illustrated as being plain s heres, or balls, but it is obvious that t ey may be ornamented in any manner desirable or may be of any suitable shape. The removable head, or ball, 3, has arranged within it a tubular shaft 4. having a flaring, or funnel shaped mouth -5, that may be formed integral with the Specification. of Letters Patent. Patented Sept. 29, 1914. A ucatibn'mea March 19, 1913. Serial No. 755,329.
rate truncated cone shaped piece held in position on the end of the tube bymeans of extensions 6- from the body of the tube. The tube is secured to the interior surface of the shell by suitable -means, such as a glob of solder -9. The tube is preferably formed by rolling a blank as -7 of flexible material loosely into a tube the internal diameter of which is the same as that of the pin 1. The blank? being coated, on whatwill be the inner side of the tube when formed, with a layer of tough, elastic fric- I' have found damar tion material .8-. varnish tobe a suitable material to use to produce the requisite-friction, but I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to that material as my invention contemplates the use of any. material that spread on the interior of the tube a will furnish the necessary friction to oppose the entrance of the pin thereinto and conversely resist its withdrawal. v
I have illustrated myinvention as applied to a hat-pin, and in this instance after the hat-pin has been passed through the hat the removable ball is placed on the pointed end of the pin whereby the pin will be prevented from being lost, or removed from the hat unbeknown to the person wearing the same. And thepoi'nt of the pin will be prevented from injuring objects that it might come in contact with. The removable ball may be employed in connection with other types of pins than that illustrated and it is obvious that the construction of the same is susceptible of various changes which will be permissible by the appended claim.
Having described my, invention so that any one may; make and use the same, I
claim An artlcle of manufacture, comprising a hollow shell having an opening, a loosely coiled tube secured by one. end to the inner periphery of the shell and in alinement with said opening, a flaring entrance secured to the outer end of the tube and lying within the shell, the interior of the tube being coated with damar varnish to increase the resistance offered to the withdrawal of a pin.
CHARLES GATES.
